Hi, During the IRC meeting last week, there was some long discussion about the default 11.4 theming, especially for the background. Let me try to summarize what was said: - the proposed background is similar to what you can see at http://karl-tux-stadt.de/ktuxs/?p=2677 (but with a different shade of green). - as a distribution, having a consistent look and feel is rather important: we do want to have the boot splash and the desktop background form a consistent set. - some people thought that the currently proposed background is too close to KDE: it's based on a background that got included in KDE SC 4.5, and that exists in distribution-branded versions (like the openSUSE one). See the posts starting in August at http://ivan.fomentgroup.org/blog/ - some people mentioned that upstream GNOME will ask distributions to use the upstream GNOME 3 theme, including the background for GNOME 3 (so not for 11.4, but 11.4+1). And now my personal opinion. Let me first ignore the background :-) With GNOME 3, there is a real effort to build a theme (called Adwaita) that upstream wants to see adopted by distributions. And our beloved jimmac is working on it. As we don't have anybody seriously working on a GNOME theme anymore, it feels easier for us to stay with Sonar for 11.4 and switch to the upstream theme afterwards. Note that we can't switch to Adwaita now as it's not complete yet, and it's really more targetted at GNOME 3. For the background... I don't know exactly how to feel: - I'm not happy with us adopting a variation of a KDE background, as it can easily give the feeling that GNOME is a second-class citizen in openSUSE, and that openSUSE is a KDE distro. - I'd like us to adopt the Adwaita background in 11.4+1. But this means we potentially lose the consistent artwork in 11.4+1, which is bad. And my previous item applies with s/KDE/GNOME/, I guess ;-) So I guess I need more time to decide how to feel. I prefer if we can add an openSUSE logo watermarked on jimmac's stripes background and just use that. Someone who is artistic like gnokii/garrett may be interested to help us. Just my 1.5 cents: as a long-time GNOME user with a fairly strong distaste for KDE (and the ceaseless, endless, long-winded rantings of KDE users)... I'm just fine with a KDE derived background. If it looks nice - it is just a background, an image. I wouldn't feel slighted at all; I probably wouldn't even know. <ASIDE>I thought openSUSE was/is a KDE distro?! But one with an excellent GNOME implementation; so I'm happy. It has, IMO, the best implementation of just about everything. KDE is the default desktop in the installer - openSUSE is a KDE distro. I hold no problems with the wallpaper being close to KDE (either openSUSE or KDE upstream). I face this in a openSUSE perspective in which I don't mind who contributes for the wallpaper. My only regard about the background is that personally I would love to have a more 'alive' thing with a bit more of color, but we can't please everyone. So it's not really important. As long as we can identify our users with the wallpaper and they like it, it's all good.

Yes I find this to be consistent and in fact we should actually support upstream GNOME. My only regard on this is when you see a screenshot of a default desktop we often by the wallpaper can identify the distribution, but proving a full GNOME upstream GNOME, we are loosing some visibility as a distro. This isn't actually much of a problem, and if gnome-shell and GNOME can benefit for it, we can and actually should support their claim. Though with 2 grains of salt I wouldn't mind having also providing a package with Sonar for GNOME shell and the the usual openSUSE artwork (despite of not being on the default desktop). I would risk Sonar for gnome-shell because Sonar has a very strong user base which is loyal. We shouldn't ditch without some discussion. +1 for full GNOME branding (as long as we deliever our stuff as well as 'optional') for a greater GNOME3 good.

Well you are right. But the real issue here is as Vincent told on the meeting, there is a GNOME request to ship with GNOME3 default branding to support the launch of GNOME Shell. GNOME3 is new and there is too much fuss and gossip already even without considering Unity as a competitor (competitor for me is any product/service that replaces totally or parcially our product/service). Lets give them (GNOME Project) a hand and honor the 2nd position that Novell has as a GNOME contributor and help GNOME shell. I would rather break consistency and support GNOME on this one, than going against a request that most distributions are following. This has other implications that could be analysed as positioning and differentiation. And of course this concepts might shift a bit from the original path, but on the end those changes will be superseded by a closer and stronger relation with GNOME upstream, which might bring even greater benefits.

It happened on Fedora[1]. Mizmo already made very clear that Fedora 15 is shipping fully GNOME3 upstream branded. I don't think if we follow the same path we're following Fedora, but instead we are complying with a request from the GNOME Project for greater visibility on gnome-shell. My 2 cents is that we should support GNOME Project on this one, thus contributing for the success of the long waited gnome-shell. Honor our main sponsor which is the 2nd ranked contributor on GNOME upstream and risk a bit more. No pain, no gain.

For some background: http://ostatic.com/blog/red-hat-dictates-fedora-15-wallpaper I think the main point is related to the fact that GNOME Project has made a request to distributions to support the launch of GNOME Shell. While there are some distributions that I doubt they will follow this, the most known ones will most likely follow Fedora and do it. Deviating from their request might also be dangerous for us, specially when Novell is the 2nd contributor of GNOME, and if Novell's Community Project (openSUSE?) deviates from it might pass the wrong message. Between consistency and the message issue, I think that breaking consistency is probably less harmful for us. As for your suggestion, it should've been contemplated by the very start by GNOME upstream. I don't think it's nice to ask people to remove downstreamer visibility which is a bit 'anti-natura' given the fact that distributions have a very splitted user base across desktops, which is even worst in the case of openSUSE where KDE is very strong. Your suggestion does provide a more reasonable asset to work, so I would go +1 as long as it doesn't provide any real impact with our relations to upstream GNOME. (PS: I don't like the fact that many will think we're following Fedora, Fedora's role is understandable since according to some stats I've seen 91% of the lines of code on gnome-shell have came from Red Hat, so their support to gnome-shell is understandable. And of the tiny subset that intimate with such decisions to have such a thought there is also a subset of those who care about who is following who. Regarding that remaining set of users - they should get a @*&@#(* life. So I think the flaw is the use of "many" in "the fact that many will think". Substitute that with "s/many/a miserable few/".

Ok I might have failed on giving perspective... regarding to the 'following Fedora'. This was meant on a perspective that we follow the 'model' that Red Hat established for it's community enrollment (therefore Fedora). I get this feeling not from the users, but from our own communication. As Fedora is pointed by Red Hat as a decisive asset for the success of Red Hat, Novell seemed to try and follow the same model with openSUSE. That's the perspective from that statement. for GNOME 3, its still a technical preview and there I go with vuntz it can be the default upstream. Its better for feeling the new user expirience That design becomes the openSUSE touch when its really part of the release.

Hello, So far as I see nothing comes out until yet, but I have to move definitly forward. So I would keep the grey background and change the geeko to celadon. Sure there will not be all happy with that but I have to work with the background! I'm afraid a dark theme + grey background will be really too dark by default :/ Did anybody try it? Does it work well? Also, will we have a dynamic background? See the openSUSE-dynamic-wallpaper package for an example. I guess something like just switching between the grey version of the background and the green one could work...
