[opensuse-gnome] Bug 436758 & 386359 - Renaming YaST in the menu and Control Center tasks
Both bugs 436758[1] and 386359[2] have been open for a year or more, both relating to YaST & the Control Center. The first recommends YaST, in the right hand side of the Computer menu, should be renamed to something more descriptive, like "Administrator Settings". This was originally opened against 11.1 but was pushed back. [1] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=436758 The second recommends re-adding Common Tasks to the Control Center, as we had during 10.2. It was quick shortcuts to tasks (like Add a Printer, Manage Accounts, Change Default Applications) that can be quickly done in either the Control Center or YaST. This was originally opened against 11.0(!). [2] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=386359 Is there enough time to get these two usability issues settled before 11.2? Yeah, that's the Name vs GenericName issue. Magnus or Federico should probably comment on that, since it's a gnome-main-menu issue.

This one is trivial to solve, as long as we come with a list of capplets to add there. I had planned to do that a bit later in the cycle (since it's doable when we're frozen for many many things), but help is welcome. If you can come with a list of tasks, it's just a simple thing to change in gconf2-branding-openSUSE, iirc. How about: *Add User (opens YaST User and Group Management) *Change Look and Feel (opens Appearance) *Add Printer (opens system-config-printer) *Configure Network (or Connect to the Internet?), opens NetworkManager settings window *Change Account Picture (opens About Me) *Open Administrator Settings (opens YaST) Some of these came from the 10.2 Control Center (http://en.opensuse.org/Image:GNOME_Control_center.jpg), BTW. (this was discussed on opensuse-factory too, trying to consolidate the discussion here since it's more appropriate) Le samedi 29 août 2009, à 20:19 -0500, Kevin Yeaux Dupuy a écrit :

Here's what I have so far: Change Look and Feel: gnome-appearance-properties.desktop Set Preferred Applications: default-applications.desktop Configure Printer: system-config-printer.desktop Configure Network: nm-connection-editor.desktop Edit Personal Information: gnome-about-me.desktop Add User: YaST2/users.desktop Open Administrator Settings: YaST.desktop I'm not really sure about "add user", to be honest: I don't think it happens that often, and it's pretty clear that it'd be part of "Open Administrator Settings". Now, one major issue is that the strings will be in english :/ Scott, do you know how we're supposed to handle the translation of common tasks in the cc shell? Are we really expecting to have translated text from gconf? If yes, then it doesn't work out well with the way we do gconf branding; we'd probably need to find another way... If you put them into somewhere in a .pot file (lcn or yast branch), we will translate it, same as we do the rest of pots. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Not really. This means we'll have translations available, but they won't get used, given how the code currently behaves. Which is why I was asking Scott what's the best way to fix this :-) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I don't think we have ever changed this list via branding.
Here's what I have so far:
I would suggest adding "Change Password:gnome-passwd.desktop" We are adding that to SLED for fate #302560
Change Look and Feel: gnome-appearance-properties.desktop Set Preferred Applications: default-applications.desktop Configure Printer: system-config-printer.desktop Configure Network: nm-connection-editor.desktop Edit Personal Information: gnome-about-me.desktop Add User: YaST2/users.desktop
Open Administrator Settings: YaST.desktop hmm, yeah I guess. Although with YaST now being a top level item in the main menu system area, do we want this redundancy at this level also?

Currently yes.

We could just directly patch the schema file in gnome-control-center and then gnome-patch-translation should take care of it right? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Never mind - missed the "Edit Personal Information" in the list below.
Change Look and Feel: gnome-appearance-properties.desktop Set Preferred Applications: default-applications.desktop Configure Printer: system-config-printer.desktop Configure Network: nm-connection-editor.desktop Edit Personal Information: gnome-about-me.desktop Add User: YaST2/users.desktop

We do since 11.1 at least, afaik. Are you suggesting that we should patch the schema file in gnome-control-center? (I'd like to avoid that, but if there's no other solution...) Nothing about the control-centre tasks in RC1 yet. Will this (adding common tasks to the left pane of gnome-control-centre) be done for 11.2 final at all? Please look into it as it is very useful to have the common tasks staring at you rather than you having to stare at the control-centre trying to locate them, or typing some text in the search field. -- Atri -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I've had something ready for this, but this was blocked on the translation issue :/ If we consider it's better to ignore the translation issue for now, then this is the patch for gconf2-branding-openSUSE.
