[opensuse-gnome] Some changes to the patterns
Hey GNOMEers, I've got some suggested changes to the applications we install by default: Proposed additions: bijiben, deja-dup Bijiben ("Notes"): The new GNOME notes app. Alternatively we could add Gnote, which is almost the same as Tomboy. Both can import Tomboy notes. DejaDup: See Atri's email [1]. This app is great. Ubuntu patches it into GNOME Control Center (we don't need to do that). Proposed to drop: alacarte, gbrainy, tomboy alacarte - GNOME 2 menu editor, no longer makes sense since GNOME has no menus. Or separators. Or categories (in GNOME 3.8). It doesn't even seem to be capable of hiding/showing apps anymore (the only feature that worked in 12.2). gbrainy - Nothing functionally wrong here, but I'd like to move to mostly GNOME 3 apps by default, and gbrainy is clearly not planning to do so. tomboy - Inferior to its fork, Gnote. Gnote has been updated for GNOME 3; Tomboy hasn't. Additionally, I really want to get rid of XTerm and "Linux 32-bit Terminal," since I suspect almost everyone uses GNOME Terminal. Hello Michael, IMHO, if you think to drop alacarte then you should take care of alternative way to set programs especially the ones you are not installing with openSUSE packages, in order you can set them properly. One of most annoying aspect in new Gnome concept (to my eyes) is the apparent lack of configuration settings, as well as too many "hidden functions" which need too much time to be discovered. -0.5 from me - I'm still partial to alacarte as it's an easy way of creating/managing application shortcuts even if it doesn't fully mesh with GNOME 3.8's way of doing things

I've used XTerm to save the day when I've had GNOME in a very messy state in the past. Yes, I know I'm crazy, but I dont see the harm in letting this one slide. Thanks for the ideas!

The Xterm is necessary, as it doesn't save only GNOME, when time comes, but any desktop.
Surely in the dire eventuality that you somehow manage to destroy your terminal emulator, you can Ctrl+Alt+F2? (Actually I think I've heard of gsettings corruption borking gnome-terminal in 12.3 or maybe 12.2.) But this was more of an idle complaint, though that didn't come out properly in my original email. Xterm is part of the X11 pattern, not the GNOME pattern.

I'm not sure upstream sees it entirely the same way, considering that there was just an alacarte 3.9.x release :) So, this one we should keep for now (also for the reasons others mentioned).
