For 10.2 / 10.3 we made a big push in improving the patterns (e.g. making sure that the "GNOME Development" pattern really has everything you need to do development), but they can certainly be further improved.
Is there a bug about changing the default view to use patterns? I'd like to add it to the bug list.

Possibly. It depends on how many people would vote for the bug, etc. Will you enter it into bugzilla.
