Hallo. I am just thinking about update of GNOME:STABLE to GNOME 2.20. In difference to previous versions, we may stick it to factory for awhile by using package links. Later we can copy frozen packages there physically. What about GNOME:UNSTABLE? If anybody volunteer to start update to 2.21, there is a chance. Otherwise, we can freeze or drop this repository for some time. [opensuse-gnome] Few reqs...

Hi there! I would have just a few reqs: * nautilus-image-converter * comix * totem-xine I tried to compile nautilus-image-converter from source, everything went ok, but it does not work on openSUSE 10.3. Neither image-converter script from Nautilus G-scripts. I installed Fedora Rawhide package and it works fine, fortunately. I've compiled comix from source with no problems at all, but it would be very nice if you include it on official repos. Evince can read cbr and cbz files, and thumbnail them within Nautilus (which is very useful), but it is very unusable for reading comics. It consumes too much of CPU. Cheers! -- Igor Jagec

Hi I'm writing an OSC plugin (http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/osc_plugins) for adding a listpatches command. The GNOME distrib in openSUSE lacks a tool to configure Bluetooth devices (especially mice!). I'm always stuck with using KBluetooth to configure my mouse... IMO, the Application Browser colors are a bit surprising as long as you use the default bright desktop colors. If you click on "Utilies" it darkens the wanted area with a blueish color. But I'd expect some kind of highlighting. I'd rather dim away with this blue or gray the groups the user is not interested in. Anyone who was on #opensuse-gnome yesterday may have heard me complaining about bluez-gnome. So, G:C now has an updated version (0.14 compared with 0.6 in Factory) which is actually useful. Examples of packages: libogg, libvorbis, libdvdnav, libdvdread, libsidplay, wavpack,... multimedia:gstreamer010 or GNOME:GSTREAMER010 or so (exact case and name is not sure): Move gstreamer packages from GNOME:*STABLE here. When I use 'cairo_text_path', I found that it cost too much time at the first running, even more than 3 seconds. My version is 1.0.2 in sled10-sp1. I don't know what can I do to make it faster. [opensuse-gnome] Notes on Beta2 install

I just performed a Beta2 install from the Gnome CD and ended up with a mess of an install. I allowed the option in the install to pre-connect to the online repository and I think that's what caused the problem. The Factory online repository is a moving target and there were a number of packages that required different versions of libraries etc. All of that explanation so I could propose this.... Can we get online repositories that are snapshots of the Beta releases? I was so excited to have an install that was on a single install and would pull packages from online only to find it was almost useless. I understand that once we release this may not happen, but we can't even test it right now because we the default online repository is factory. One other thing I've noticed, when I am installed and connected to the online repository, the time taken to load up the "Software Management" tool in Yast is completely unacceptable. I use sled sp1 and gnome. I am trying to upgrade my install of libgnomecanvas 2.12 to 2.14 using the opensuse gnome:stable repo. Everytime i install 2.14 version, it messes-up gmd so i can not login. Has anyone gone to 2.14 from 2.12 successfully? If so, please share exactly what you had to do. Some people say it is buggier than the cockroach nest which I found two days ago in my cupboard. It's not that bad, but close. Anyway --- we want to build a list of the bugs which annoy the most people, so that we can fix those first. Rodrigo Moya and myself have been talking of how to do this. There are several ways to do this: - By counting the "votes" in Bugzilla. If you look very closely in bug pages (or use the high technology available in Edit/Find), you'll see a "Vote for this bug" field. This hasn't been used very much in bugs for openSUSE 10.3, while there is some interesting info in 10.2 (e.g. the most-voted bug of all in 10.2 is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222490 - Nautilus uses 100% CPU; we have a patch, which I'll take care of putting into a package for 10.2 soon). - By looking at the bugs with the highest number of duplicates. No idea about this yet. - By looking at bugs with the largest CC list. I don't know if people really take the trouble of looking for bugs before (re)filing them, so this may not give out meaningful info. - Bug severities / priorities, of course. Vote for bugs that happen to *you*, not for bugs which you don't get but which you think may be important. * Please make sure that you are in the CC list for relevant bugs which have already been filed (or just file the bug again; the elves will take care of marking it as a duplicate). [opensuse-gnome] Plan for Integration of GNOME 2.20 Packages into Factory Next Week

Hello all, This is the plan for integration of the GNOME 2.20 release into factory/10.3. As you know, the GNOME-2.20 release date is Wednesday, September 19. These updates will clearly not make RC1 but they will make it in for RC2 and/or the final build of 10.3. The upstream GNOME tarballs, however, are due on Monday, September 17. Which means the GNOME packaging team at Novell will be starting to submit the updates to factory next Monday, and will declare it finished on Wednesday. Keep in mind that GNOME-2.20 has been in hard code freeze since September 10 with only a few code changes approved by the release team since then. These updates will largely be no-ops (just a version bump) and translation or doc updates. This is the plan: We have the package list here: http://spreadsheets0.google.com/ccc?key=pXWjzV1g7sCqH0NY9PgddOg&hl=en_GB It is a public doc, editable by the SUSE team. sbrabec will start early in Prague, followed by mw, mauropm and myself in the US. We will update spreadsheet to indicate that a package is being worked on, and then mark it as updated once submitted to our internal build system. We may even solicit some help from other well known packaging superstars such as jpr, coolo, etc. We will be taking the tarballs from upstream as they are submitted by the maintainers to the FTP tree; grabbing them from here, as that's where they show up the quickest: http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/gnome/sources/ Internal administrivia: When you build packages place them in $HOME/Export/yyyy/mmdd/arch so others building packages can pull them into the $BUILD_ROOT with --prefer-rpms We're all looking forward to a great 10.3! Hi, The date representation for polish locale in 10.3 seems to cause some issues. The dates are represented in the form of roman letters such as the following in 10.3, Pn, 10 IX 2007, 17:09:05 IST where as the date representation for the same locale with 10.2 is, pon wrz 10 17:20:23 IST 2007 Evolution uses strptime to parse the date strings using locale's date format. The corresponding bug assiociated with this is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=302371 . Any clues on how to fix this ? [opensuse-gnome] Weird GNOME-related RPM problems

I've noticed these related problems on-and-off involving GNOME packages on openSUSE 10.2: - on a stock install, gnome-games when queried would list, among others /var/games/glines.{Large,Medium,Small}.scores -- but the RPM actually installs /var/games/glines.scores - attempts to upgrade to GNOME:STABLE always results in a broken install, one of the telltale sign being the inability to load icons - after downgrading back to openSUSE-10.2+updates+GNOME:Community, to my surprise the icon loading problem still occurs. I tried running 'glines' from the terminal, and get this: (glines:17512): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: Cannot open pixbuf loader module file '/etc/opt/gnome/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders': No such file or directory Weird, I thought. Perhaps it's the same RPM bug that used to affect Fedora, where some files are clobbered on RPM upgrades? To be safe, I removed gtk2 (with --no-deps), and then reinstalled it. Twice. Using smart and, for safety measures, using rpm manually. I have backported Factory of 0.4.0 to 10.2 with the cost of dropping making of documentation and %if -ing a lot of stuff. Also I have set a dependancy on hicolor-theme 0.10 due to the missing icons otherwise. After some discussion on the #opensuse-gnome channel, I would like to followup and clarify some things regarding this decision. 1) Nautilus is still the default for burning data CDs and copying ISO images. Banshee is still the default for burning audio CDs. Brasero is available as an application that can be used to accomplish these tasks as well, if a user so desires. We will not change the defaults for 10.3, but may evaluate different defaults for the next release. 2) I have tested Brasero on five different sets of hardware, alongside GnomeBaker. On each set of hardware I tested audio CD burning, data CD burning, ISO burning, and CD duplication. Brasero was successful in all 20 operations. GnomeBaker on the other hand failed each time with the same result (regarding the cdrecord compatibility layer for wodim). 3) For any issues that may arise with Brasero, we will be able to actually work with the active maintainer of the application, benefit the upstream project, and can expect faster turnaround time for the issues due to the activity level of the project. With GnomeBaker all issues will have to be resolved and maintained at the distribution level with no upstream support, because there is no longer an upstream for GnomeBaker - it is a dead project. 4) If you have used Brasero on 10.2 and ran into negative results, please try the Brasero that will ship in 10.3 Beta 3 before casting doubt. A lot has gone into Brasero and the underlying wodim stack since 10.2. Please do not hesitate to respond with further concerns or issues! We all want the best for GNOME in 10.3. Here are a few of the most significant reasons for the sudden switch: 1) Brasero is maintained and actively developed; while it is still young, this is very important. 2) GnomeBaker is deprecated, unmaintained, and hasn't seen a commit in seven months [2] and a release in nearly a year [3]. 3) Brasero, while slightly rough around the edges and could benefit from a little polish (but the same can be argued for GnomeBaker) works with the new wodim and related tools, which means it's actually possible to burn discs in Brasero. 4) Brasero has decent desktop integration, including support for Beagle, Totem playlists, libnotify, and solid GStreamer support. We are urging anyone interested to give Brasero a thorough testing and report bugs on it ASAP for Beta 3 and beyond. I have ported my Fedora packaging of Vala for openSUSE, and in order to be able to use both the openSUSE Build Service and Fedora's koji from my openSUSE machine, have also ported Fedora's python-krbV (as well as koji itself). Vala, which is a compiler for a C#-style language that compiles down to GObject C code (or optionally straight to native code), might be of interest; with permission I'd like to add it to GNOME:Community. Is anyone interested in making use of python-krbV? There's a Python repository in the OBS, what are the criteria for adding packages there?
