Feature changed by: Martin Seidler (pistazienfresser) Feature #310963, revision 8 Title: Make openSUSE releases with more life time than 18 months. openSUSE Distribution: Evaluation by engineering manager Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Rafael Belmonte (eaglescreen) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: It would be nice if OpenSUSE would make special releases which have much life time than 18 months, as like as Ubuntu does with its LTS releases. Ubuntu release a LTS version each two years, and they have five years of support, updates, and repository life. OpenSUSE could adopt a similar policy about this. Believe me, many people love to can install an OS and not have to touch it in years, and this is a main reason about why I deploy Ubuntu LTS releases in some systems instead of OpenSUSE. Relations: - Create an open SLES (feature/id: #306982) Use Case: Robert call to his nephew, Richard, and request him to install Linux in his computer. Richard thinks in OpenSUSE as first choice, but when Richard tells Robert that OpenSUSE will expire in 18 months, Roberts ask Richard to install another distribution with more Life-time, because Robert is scared about facing an OS upgrade or installation, and Richard won't be in the country at that date. Mary wants to install a GNU/Linux distribution for the computer she uses in her business, she dudes about to install OpenSUSE or Ubuntu, and after thinking a few time about it, she decides to install Ubuntu LTS because she won't need to upgrade or reinstall the OS until four years, which is much comfortable for her situation. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: 18 months of support is not always enough for many users. Many people hates having to upgrade or install a new OS each 18 months. Discussion: #1: Thomas Schmidt (digitaltomm) (2010-12-14 10:36:53) There is an initiative in doing a log term release, please see the opensuse-project mailinglist and here: http://lists.rosenauer.org/mailman/listinfo/evergreen #2: Martin Seidler (pistazienfresser) (2010-12-22 20:47:14) (reply to #1) In the mailing-list (archive) under "openSUSE LTS" http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2010-11/msg00223.html (http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2010-11/msg00223.html% 20%3Cbr/%3E) http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2010-12/msg00004.html (http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2010-12/msg00004.html) #3: Martin Seidler (pistazienfresser) (2010-12-31 19:45:20) I think openFATE #306982 Create an open SLES https://features.opensuse.org/306982 is ether related or a duplicate (may depend on the definitions). + #4: Martin Seidler (pistazienfresser) (2010-12-31 21:16:07) + the link without the line braking in the URL + https://features.opensuse.org/306982 -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/310963
