[edit - kernel now expected late-Sept/early-Oct] - greatly improved wifi drivers (heise) - - http://www.h-online.com/open/features/Kernel-Log-Coming-in-3-1-Part-1-Networ... - http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTY2MA - kernel 3.1 will bring a few noteworthy advantages - - solution for kernel power regressions: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTYwMQ - possibility of support for Intels Cedar Trail platform: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTYyNw - better KVM virtualisation support: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTU3NQ - better Nouveau DRM support for fermi: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTYzNQ Discussion: #1: Jedi Beeftrix (jedibeeftrix) (2011-07-13 12:36:20) 49 GMA500 patches published and due to be included in 3.1: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTY2Mg #2: Christoph Obexer (cobexer) (2011-07-16 22:18:13) I tried booting with nouveau on my new GeForce GTX 560 TI System recently and had it freeze hard. Only removing nouveau made it "usable" again. So if Linux 3.1 contains improvements for nouveau this might be very important to keep in mind! #3: Ralph Ulrich (ulenrich) (2011-07-17 12:39:10) Seriously citing phoronix about future speculations? I could give you tons of phoronix articles going untrue ... #4: Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) (2011-07-19 10:47:33) Every kernel brings many new features - and we have to make a cut at some point. There's no gurantee that 3.1 will be available in time. I suggest you talk directly on the opensuse-kernel mailing list once 3.0 is out with the kernel developers. For now I reject this. #5: Johannes Obermayr (jobermayr) (2011-08-26 16:05:40) Seems it will become true: https://build.opensuse.org/package/files?package=kernel-source&project=Kernel:HEAD http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kernel/2011-08/msg00046.html (= devel project for Factory kernel) http://kernel.opensuse.org/cgit/kernel/ https://build.opensuse.org/project/subprojects?project=Kernel (no branch named 'openSUSE-12.1') #6: Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) (2011-08-28 10:27:13) (reply to #5) Please ask on kernel@opensuse.org mailinglist for the actual plans. + #7: Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) (2011-09-01 10:59:50) (reply to #6) + Indeed, Jeff Mahoney just said they plan to go for 3.1. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/312627
