[opensuse-factory] Installation on Skylake
Hi I have an Intel Skylake (in my case an E3-1245v5) and tried to install Leap 42.1 with the net-installation ISO file. However, when installation starts, the screen goes blank. Last output I can see is where it scans for hardware. Instead of launching the installer, the system hangs. Using text-mode installation doesn't work either. Alt+Ctrl+Fx to switch to other consoles also doesn't work. The system hangs with a black screen. Skylake CPUs are supported by Kernel 4.2 an newer. IMHO the net-installation ISO contains a fairly old kernel (4.0.4 or something). Is it possible to update the net-installation ISO to use a newer kernel? Not realistically. You have 3 choices to try: - Tumbleweed will always have a recent kerenl, but you may find the whole thing too leading edge. - You could try Leap 42.2 Aplha 2 (a pre-release of 42.2) It has a kernel from Jan 2016 with lots of back ports of fixes and new features. - Use susestudio to build a custom release of Leap 42.1 with a modern kernel. I have the 42.2 kernel in: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:gregfreemyer:Kernel:LTS, so you could use it for the custom release. Hello! Leap 42.1 provides only 4.1.* kernel. I know 3 options for you: 1) build at SUSE Studio image with never kernel; 2) use leap 42.2 alpha2; 3) use tumbleweed. -- Best regards, Dmitriy Perlow R&D chemical engineer Lekpharm JLLC -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I have six 42.1 installations with the shipped 4.1.* on Skylake (6700K). Even though they came preloaded from a disk image copy by the hoster, and use the "nomodeset" boot option, the thing runs afterwards. Which means you just need to use text mode installation plus nomodeset and then install a 4.2+ later on. Not a big deal really. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
