[opensuse-factory] My observations about openSUSE 11.1 RC1
Hi, I have:
uptime 10:35am up 11:44, 1 user, load average: 0,23, 0,37, 0,42
running openSUSE 11.1 RC-1 live-CD :) , I activated some repositories from YaST and installed some packages so I can work normally in live CD, and I must say that I'm impressed (and all is running from my RAM, even I'm using NetBeans 6.5 right now, wow!), I can't wait to install the final release into my hard drive. But, there are some little things that I would really like in the final release to be fixed: - hide/unhide icons in the system tray (actually there is a dialog for hidding, but you cannot unhide them with the little arrow). - volumen keys don't work - crtl+alt+k don't change the keyboard layout - miss the very functional popup menu in dolphing and konqueror to create or add to a compressed file (zip, tar, tar.gz, etc). from a folder or files, I use this menu every day in KDE3. - kdebluetooth4 don't start Rgds. -- Xavier Callejas Open your mind, use Open Source. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Maybe if you had installed it you'd realize that it's a very poor release. Once it messed up your dual boot menu.lst for example. ... Or Kupdateapplet giving you a non-working online update configuration dialog. ...Or Kupdateapplet continuously asking you about smolt registration, even if you click "don't ask again" at the notification box. (Boy are people going to hate this, omfg) How about Dolphin insisting on defaulting to /home/user/Documents/ no matter what you enter in the configuration? By default settings say /home/user/ .. but that's not what's shown upon launching dolphin. This release has lots of very, very annoying problems staring the user right in the face immediately upon first boot. God knows what kind of monsters will reveal their faces under the surface after longer use. Personally I've only tested the RC and the betas a few hours each, but this release scares the hell out of me. I have serious doubts it'll be anywhere near a remotely polished product that you can recommend to any non-geek within two weeks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Once it messed up your dual boot menu.lst for example. This problem is pretty fresh, so I'm confident it can go away quickly too.
... Or Kupdateapplet giving you a non-working online update configuration dialog. This one is specific to the way the livecds are generated. As I told you on IRC, it's a known bug I didn't find time to fix.

-- Xavier Callejas
After extensively testing beta 5 on KDE4, 11.1 will be another kde3 box for the final release. After going through every dialog trying to configure KDE 4 to my liking I just kept running into issues that kde4 just wont do. For example, you can't configure the icon text to my normal 525 px. for icon view instead kde4 just offers small, medium or large like a happy meal. I can't add an application 'menu' to the taskbar, there is just no way to do it The only way to get something close is the create a partially functional plasmoid to try and collect what you want in there and then add the plasmoid widget to the taskbar to have it behave completely different from what a simple traditional menu on the taskbar does. And then you can no longer place focus on files in detailed view in konqueror by clicking to the right of the name - that feature was intentionally not included.. And these are just the tip of the iceberg. It looks like the kde core values of efficiency of use (minimizing the required clicks and ctrl+alt+clutter) and being the most configurable desktop have slipped by the wayside in favor of plasmoids and widgets that look kind of cool but take twice the work and effort to get normal tasks done with. It has promise, but I just hope it grows up quickly. Yes and bugs were filed on all to be closed invalid - you just have to learn all the new konqueror ctrl+click+clutter to be able to place focus on files where a simple single click did it all before... -- David C.
