[opensuse-factory] pulseaudio

On linuxtoday.com I just read review of "Pulseaudio and Kmix 4.4 in Sabayon 5" saying that the issues with pulseaudio and kde 4.4 have been fixed, something along the lines that kmix 4 has pulseaudio integration. I wonder if openSUSE has fixed it in Milestone 1/2. There was a problem where some programs would not run if kmix and pavucontrol were both running, e.g skype would only run with pavucontrol running. On one box skype was working with pavucontrol, then it refused to work. Every box seemed to have a pulseaudio/kmix quirk, so I shifted work around to where things were happy running. I haven't touched what worked after upgrading to Milestone 1 and Milestone2. One comment on the article - a guy says that pulseaudio is the one thing driving him away from Ubuntu, another guy says his cure was "mv /usr/bin/pulseaudio /usr/bin/pulsesucks" - and some guys on here have said something or other similarly is driving them away from openSUSE. It looks like every perfect distro has its critics and frustrated users. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... I've had the same experience.. basically if you wanted anything other than default, PA was a nightmare. I can see how PA has the potential to eventually work better than ALSA... but right now :-( it's not much fun. My main issue with it is... Skype, and setting things up to use the USB headset. Relatively easy in ALSA, and a quirky instable mess in PA. I'd like to see PA working more logically in openSUSE/KDE... like PA working with KMix, and not needing to use pavucontrol to tell Skype to use the headset.... or even better, having applications that use PA able to select known devices instead like it is now where you only have "Default" and you have to define what Default means in each application using pavucontrol. Mandriva have some patches for phonon and kmix. I have built them here if you want to try them: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/perosb:/pulseaudio/openSUSE_... vanilla phonon has better/different pulseaudio integration if just built with pulseaudio. phonon also has more patches that I haven't tested. /per

You say everything I should have said. Just as a test, I have a SDR (Software defined Radio) python application which was uses alsa and it was running. I closed it, fired up pavucontrol, restarted it and it failed with the error below. Closed pavucontrol and started quisk - OK, so the behaviour hasn't changed with Milestone2. slipstream:/home/lancelot # quisk quisk_set_tx_filters txFilterI = 180F000 txFilterQ = 181A0A0 usbsoftrock
