[opensuse-factory] 15.1 VBoxClient: Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service, rc=VERR_ACCESS_DENIED

All, There is a problem with the virtualbox-guest packages on 15.1 being version 6.0.6 and I run the (supported until June 2020) 5.2 branch due to an error in Virtualbox 6 that prevents accessing Windows clients with the --headless option over a network. When I connect to 15.1 I get 4 errors on desktop start: VBoxClient: Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service, rc=VERR_ACCESS_DENIED (repeated 3 times) VBoxClient: DnD: Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service, rc=VERR_ACCESS_DENIED 15.1 works, but the use of shared folders, and clipboards is not right. User access to shared folders doesn't work (root can), etc.. Since the 5.2 branch is supported until June 2020 15.1 should have the 5.2 branch virtualbox-guest.... rpm available somewhere. Other than than, 15.1 is doing great. KDE3 blistering fast and beautiful :) -- David C. I am still working on this problem. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in a day. :(
15.1 works, but the use of shared folders, and clipboards is not right. User access to shared folders doesn't work (root can), etc..
The shared folders are owned by root:vboxsf. If your user is a member of that group, shared folders work, at least for me. In addition, at least bi-directional clipboards work. Please detail the problem.

I have enough work to keep 4 primary versions running - TW, Leap 15.0, Leap 15.1 and Leap 42.3. Your options will be to use the RPM from Oracle, or the packages from 15.0 Update. In either case, you may need to build the kernel modules. Larry -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Oh I know, I'm just not sure how to handle this problem. I did get shared folders working and the clipboards, but I cannot get rid of: -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Well, you can remove xmessage. Or rename it temporarily. /usr/bin/xmessage -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Larry, Another very notable problem from the version mismatch is the load the guest places on the server. With leap_15.0 the idle (for a very full install) is (0.2 - 2.2% CPU), with leap_15.1 and the version mismatch, the idle load is 6.6 - 13.8% CPU continual. 10-50 times the load. This was also the problem seen with 6.0.x --headless and windows guests (with matching versions of 6.0, only it was much, much worse with --headless windows guests) I have found the documentation yet, but VERR_ACCESS_DENIED sounds like a version complaint. I'm still picking around. Rebuilt the modules from the Oracle 5.2.30 iso, but having problems with it being loaded. I need to uninstall the virtualbox-guest... rpms, but I generally do that in a text console since it will remove vboxvideo, but I'll see if I can do it from minimal X. -- David C. I am using the Oracle package on the server that is the host for the VMs (it is running 5.2.30). The problem is in the 15.1 guest that is throwing the errors in the title and as shown in the screenshot in my last message in this thread. I did not explicitly install any VirtualBox anything in 15.1, so the installer must have seen and pulled in the virtualbox-guest...6.0.6 packages on its own seeing it was being installed in a VM. My first thought was just to remove all the virtualbox-guest... packages in 15.1, since the guest features are now in the default kernel since (4.19/4.20?) but since 15.1 is at 4.12, I think I would have to go back to installing the Linux guest additions from the Oracle package (which is what I need to do), but that doesn't explain why the 6.0.6 packages were automatically pulled in (even though I uncheck "Install Recommends") I'll go remove the virtualbox-guest... packages and build the modules with the Oracle LinuxAdditions package, but I also think I need dkms for kernel update auto-rebuilds. I'll report back. If you have any other ideas, let me know. -- David C.
