[opensuse-factory] Samba 4.1.0 into Factory?
Hi, Samba of openSUSE Factory is at the moment at version 4.0.9. We're at release candidate 2 of 4.1.0 upstream which builds and works as you can check yourself from the network:samba:TESTING repository. If it's broken to please file bugreports and handle them as described at http://en.opensuse.org/Samba in the section titled 'Samba bug reporting and advanced debugging information' 4.1.0rc3 got scheduled for September 11. 4.1.0 is now expected to be released at Friday, September 27. https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Release_Planning_for_Samba_4.1 has the most up to date roadmap details. Following http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap it's time to submit 4.1.0 RC 2 into openSUSE Factory now if we like to get 4.1.0 into openSUSE 13.1 GA. If there's no objection I'll shift network:samba:STABLE to Samba 4.1.0 RC 2 the next days. 4.1.0 is now expected to be released at Friday, September 27.
That leaves us with a ~2 week gap before openSUSE 13.1 RC1 for potential Samba 4.1.0 release slippage, which I'm okay with.

network:samba:STABLE got Samba 4.1.0 RC 2 and the submit request into openSUSE Factory is https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/197338 The systemd unit files are still missing. It would be of some value if someone files a bug report regarding this and assing it to me while taking samba-maintainers in to cc as described in the 'Samba bug reporting and advanced debugging information' section of http://en.opensuse.org/Samba There had been reports that sysvinit files lead to a not started nmbd even if the service was activated. We unfortnately didn't got a bug report to track this nor had I be able to reproduce the issue. Didn't the last release of OpSuse have samba 3.x? There has been more than a few problems with people upgrading from 3.x to 4.x and last I heard, if you don't need Active Domain features -- that simple file serving was better handled by 3.x -- but that was a few months back. I haven't kept track, but: 1) is 4.x now recommended for all cases (i.e. 3.x no longer better for file serving?) 2) is there anything that needs to be done for a user to upgrade from 3.x->4.x? 2a) I.e. will our old /etc/samba/smb.conf files "just work" with 4.x? 3) Are there any changes in going to 4.x that anyone would need to worry about? I.e. - Anything dropped in 4.x? any changes in the various idmap config options? I'm using "nss" for my own, simple, site with the range being 0-999999999. From what I've seen on the samba list, I know I'm not the only person to have to deal with both, '\' (BackSlash) & spaces in usernames as well as dealing with random "case" issues (upper/lower, with 3.x not following the windows standard of preserving case) on my Suse box (which acts as a domain controller so I can propagate ownership & permissions between my Linux & Win machines. Just wondering about how upgrades are handled (if any handling is needed)... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

An explanation shall be found on https://lwn.net/Articles/469792/ . -----Original Message----- Jan, you wrote "shall be found". That sounds like there is an ongoing discussion there, or that the answer can be found. However. the original article is from 30-nov-2011, and the latest reply on it is dated from 4-jan-2012. Earlier this year, feb-2013, at FOSDEM, it was said that you can migrate seemlessly from MS A.D. towards samba4, and (for some sysadmins more important) seemlessly also back again. Only drawback for some they said, was that samba4 had closely integrated all subfunctions, and you could no longer use separate tools like openldap and kerberos. Only exception was (when configured properly) bind. And there were (at that time) no plans for enabling the use of those other subfunctionalities... Since fosdem quite some months has passed and things might have changed. hans -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Well, the LWN article provides an answer *to me* (summary: "the samba3 file-/printserver entitled 'smbd' survives in samba4", this is also what I gathered from Lars Müller during OSC12), but we all know Linda is special in what constitutes a usable reply.

During CeBIT 2013, I talked to the guys at the SerNet booth, and I was assured that, while samba4 brings its own LDAP and DNS services, you can still roll it with a different LDAP/DNS implementation (at least, that's the plan). That is a necessity given BIND10 is combining DHCP and DNS, and you really really don't want to run around with two DNS processes. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
