[opensuse-factory] Firefox Performance
I'm not entirely sure if this is specific to OpenSUSE but thought I would post here to see if my case is isolated or not. For the past week or so Firefox has been extremely slow for me. Looking at the CPU monitor it seems like this is consistently and particularly bad when opening new tabs (100% of CPU is used for a short while and then goes back to normal). But from what I can tell this also happens sometimes at random intervals. It's got to the point where unfortunately I've had to switch to chromium as it's become close to unusable. Is this a known issue or is someone else experiencing this? -- Michael Aquilina -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes. It's been happening since one of the most recent snapshots of a week ago or so. A fix seems to be on the way: https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/673056 On Mon, Feb 18, 2019 at 11:39 PM James Knott <james.knott@jknott.net> wrote:

Same issue here, for at least several weeks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Hi, A possible workaround is to set the “content process limit” to 1. I had the same slowness problem but setting this parameter has improved firefox's performance a lot. Here you can find how the steps to set this parameter: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/performance-settings Best regards, Jaime Salud, Jaime Missatge de Rhaytana <rhaytana@gmail.com> del dia dl., 18 de febr. 2019 a les 18:11:

Got a version number? A list of extensions & plugins? Is this an up-to-date tumbleweed, or leap 15.x? x64 host or something more specialised? Which repos are you updating from? Hi Daniel, All great questions - should have thought of those before. The version of firefox I am using is: Firefox 65.0.1 (64-bit) Extensions do not seems to be the problem as starting on safe mode shows the exact same issue. However for the sake of completeness: * Checker Plus for Gmail * Display #Anchors * HTTPS Everywhere * Tabliss * uBlock Origin * YouTube Classic This is up to date version of tumbleweed and using the firefox package from the mozilla repo. However it's worth noting that from the testing I did, this affects versions of firefox that are not directly from opensuse (I downloaded nightly from the firefox website and it seems to have the same issue). Interestingly, chromium does seem to show similar behaviour in terms of using resources when changing and loading pages - but seems to be restricted to pushing only one CPU core to 100% (Firefox uses all 4 of my CPU cores). Worth noting that I also found this subreddit post a few days ago which might be related to my issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/aq21ab/poor_web_browser_performan... It could have been related to https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1124816 which has a fix on its way into factory. https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/673056 -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Hi, It seems that the last Tumbleweed release (20190224) has solved firefox's performance problem. At least, I have noticed a great improvment in my laptop. What is your experience? Best regards, Jaime Missatge de Simon Lees <sflees@suse.de> del dia dt., 19 de febr. 2019 a les 4:01:
