[opensuse-factory] Want to add KDE 4.3 to openSUSE 11.1 with existing KDE 3.5.10
Can the kde 4.3 openSUSE Live CD be used to add-on KDE 4.3 on a working openSUSE 11.1 installation (already has GNOME 2.24 & KDE 3.5) ? I do not want to do a fresh openSUSE installation from live cd. The KDE 4.3 Live CD page - (http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/), does not have any information about this. Alternatively, has anyone tried the 1-click install <http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.1/KDE4-DEFAULT.ymp> to add-on KDE 4.3 to openSUSE 11.1 with already-installed KDE 3.5.10 ? I recall sometime back there was big long-winded discussion about KDE 4.2/higher to add-on to earlier KDE 3.5 series. But no definite yes/no result from there. You can pretty easily install KDE 4.3 factory packages on 11.1 - alongside KDE3 and GNOME. And all you should need to do is add this repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU... And then install the KDE4 patterns with YaST. If you don't already have the KDE3 OBS repo you prolly want to add it, or quite a lot of KDE3 apps will probably be replaced by KDE4 ones. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.1/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I did as above, i.e. added the KDE4 Factory repo + KDE3 OBS repo (since there is also KDE 3.5.10 installed, which I would like to keep alongside KDE 4.3). On trying to do update from YaST > Software Management, I get errors similar to the ones in images ( [1] & [2] ); [2] appears after I click on <Yes> option in [1]. The packages that were selected for Update are in Pict [3]. Is there a problem with signing of some packages in the KDE4 Factory (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU...) repo ? The packages for which there were error messages (all regarding wrong checksum) were: - libqt4 - python-sip - libqca2.2-2.02-64.i586.rpm - libqt4-sql-4.5.2-57.1.i586 - libqt4-sql-mysql-4.5.2-59.1.i586 - libqt4-qt3support - libqt4-sql-sqllite - libqt4-X11 - libqt4\webkit4-4.5.2 - libqt4-qtscript PS: I choose to do the Upgrades first, from the Software Management module of Yast, and selected only the Upgrades from picture [3], not any other programs. Weird. Maybe it's related to publishing being disabled for KKFD as we're awaiting KDE 4.3.1 (released on Tuesday if all goes well). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

From the error messages displayed ( Picts [1], [2], & [3]; same message happens for each of the afore-mentioned pkgs), it seems there is a difference in package verification signatures in local repo cache & what is downloaded from oS 11.1 KDE4 Factory repo; (It seems 'zypper cache/zypper.db does not exist anymore; & I don't know how the new 'solv' system works ... see this thread from openSUSE Mailing Genereal List http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2008-06/msg02903.html).
So, I tried the following cmds, so as to refresh the package list metadata and possibly clean the cache for incorrect/effete package verification signatures: # rpmdb --rebuilddb # zypper refresh But this also did not help. A possible solution may be to disable GPG signature checks for downloaded packages from the KDE:KDE4 Factory repo; but I don't know how to do this <the /etc/zypp/repos.d/*> file did not have option of enabling/disabling signature/GPG checks; I do know that the equivalent /etc/yum/repos.d/*.repo files in Fedora do have the option of gpgcheck=1/0; but don't know where the equivalent option in openSUSE to disable GPG/signature verification is, in openSUSE 11.1. Any suggestions would be welcome. For those using _both_ : KDE 4 & KDE 3 in openSUSE 11 / 11.1, another important point that is there at the main KDE page [http://en.opensuse.org/KDE4], regarding co-install of KDE 3.5.x & KDE 4.x on the same install [http://en.opensuse.org/KDE4#KDE_3_and_KDE_4], is this:
KDE 3 and KDE 4
The KDE4 packages install into the /usr prefix, so KDE3 and KDE4 can safely be installed at the same time.
To prevent the accidental starting of KDE4 applications within a KDE3 session add at the top of /opt/kde3/bin/startkde PATH=/opt/kde3/bin:${PATH/:\/opt\/kde3\/bin} export PATH
If you are using another window manager then adding this line to the .bashrc file should also load the correct applications.
This has been already done in the Factory and KDE:KDE3 packages which also contain some other minor patches for better co-existence with KDE4 (may need to run >kbuildsycoca --noincremental once to become fully active).
Is the above still valid (after KDE 3 & KDE 4 package renaming, and addition of KDE-Playground repository) ? I have checked the < /opt/kde3/bin/startkde> file on my installation and find that the mentioned line <below>, is there in that file at the top. <PATH=/opt/kde3/bin:${PATH/:\/opt\/kde3\/bin} export PATH> Any inputs from the KDE Team/devs regarding the above highly appreciated.
