Hello all,
I'm trying to help out on the Laptop forum on fan control. How does one control the fan on a ThinkPad now that /proc/acpi/ibm is missing after running update?
Cheers!

Use the proper sysfs files instead.
What tool is not yet converted to use these files? They have been there for _years_.

Since the fan control is disabled by default. It's just a matter of creating a /etc/modprobe.d/50-thinkpad_acpi.conf file and enabling it by adding the following line:
fan_control=1
------------------------ This is for an L512.
Yes?

This configuration can be applied as well for a Lenovo Z470 and openSUSE 12.1 standard?
Many Thanks!

Great to hear. Did you get it working?
I'm considering buying a Lenovo laptop.

I've had Dell and Lenovo laptops. I'll probably never buy anything but Lenovo again. They rock. Thinkpads especially. I never control the fan manually, the EC (embedded controller) takes care of that. Make sure you use the latest BIOS. My T520 with a mid/high-end i7 runs at 114F most of the time, nearly silently, with outstanding battery life. Outstanding, A+, would buy again. :-)

That is the model that I was just looking at recently. However, it would be nice to see them offer a screen resolution of at least "1680x1050" by default.

I'm at 1920x1080 right now. Absolutely lovely screen. The matte anti-glare one.

I would like to put together a QA about setting up a ThinkPad. Think fan, media keys, Gobi etc.
This would be for the wiki.
You can email me directly on this one.
Cheers!

There're one or two places already to talk about Thinkpad and Linux like the thinkwiki. I suggest to link to those and only keep openSUSE specific stuff here,

Agreed. I am constantly helping out on the forum with openSUSE and laptops. I'm presently trying to put together a QA for the wiki. People can email me directly.

My volume keys (and mute) work. I don't have any other buttons. I don't control my fan manually.

Someone at my office made the dicision to switch from thinkpads towards HP Elite 8560w. Just two remark: Royal PITA, avoid at all costs Not just the fact that from six laptops five had fatal hw errors (can happen), but much more how HP customer survice is treating you.
Next time: IBM/Lenovo for me!

Since the fan control is disabled by default. It's just a matter of creating a /etc/modprobe.d/50-thinkpad_acpi.conf file and enabling it by adding the following line:

Great to hear. Did you get it working? I'm considering buying a Lenovo laptop.
My IdeaPad Z470 works perfectly under openSUSE 12.1. The only thing I noticed is that multimedia buttons are not fully responsive yet, but I can adjust volume by keyboard Fn key.
I would like to know if somebody tried to set the acpi.conf in order to control the Fan of this laptop.
Cheers,
Marco
