[opensuse-factory] Can we please have newer than 8.22 coreutil (dd) on next leap or even current leap?
Hello maintainers. I would like to see some dd with progress meter :) and found out that gnu coreutil dd version 8.24 at least (released july 2015) comes with a built-in functionality. Wondering why leap 42.1 was released with gnu coreutil 8.22 which dates back to 2013? Thank's you in advance. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

why Leap 42.1 was released with that? - Because Leap 42.1 is based on SLES12-SP1 as much as possible for the core platform (please read about Leap what it is) Will 42.1 see an update for coreutils? - Unlikely because coreutils sounds pretty core and there is risk to introduce new issues (please again read what Leap is supposed to provide) Can it be updated in Leap 42.2: - apparently it already is already updated to 8.25 when I look at the current status Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I was discussing with pth and coolo at that time - given that coreutils doesn't have that dramatic changes - , yet it was considered too risky. Hello yes thanks I was already monitoring it via the kill usr1 means
sudo kill -USR1 $(pgrep ^dd)
Thanks for newer dd in next leap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

you forget that leap is a "conservative" repo. and 8.25 is available in Base:System for leap. use the force, luke: software.opensuse.org/search -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

You should just use ddrescue (gnu_ddrescue), also because it does not have the awkward conversion (conv=). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

what do you mean? Would you elaborate on what's wrong with the "conv=..." option, please? You don't have to use it (if you don't want its functionality ... Er, awkward options like count= (combined with bs=) which make you have to do convert byte offsets into sector-sized pieces, and damn you if the number of bytes to skip=, seek= or be transferred is a prime number. Well, these options may make sense in their own right, but just once again show that dd is not the tool anyone should be looking for. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Admittedly, calculations with count=, bs=, skip= and seek= can become complicated (while you may split it into 2 dd's, one for seeking and one for the actual reading), but this doesn't clarify why conv= would be awkward. After all, dd(1) is a general-purpose, low-level tool which is very powerful, so sure it not a tool anyone could use (without reading and understanding the manual). They're not awkward if you know what they're used for. I started work at a company that paid a programmer to write a program to convert CNC data files for a customer. It took a LONG time to do the conversion often started in the evening to run over night. I wrote a script using dd to do the same thing and it did the conversion about 50 times faster turning a 50 minute process into a one minute process. It's all about using the correct tool for the job at hand. -- Ken linux since 1994 S.u.S.E./openSUSE since 1996 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
