[opensuse-factory] linux-kernel-headers

Hello, I wonder what is the purpose of linux-kernel-headers package? It's a bit outdated in comprasion with kernel-source package. That's why it's impossible to make a kernel module for nvidia drivers or vmware. But still it has all needed headers for those packages, am I wrong? -- Regards, Nikolay Derkach

This includes the kernel headers for usage in userspace applications.

There is no need to keep this package in sync with the kernel version. It is for user space applications only.

It is wrong to build kernel modules with these haeders. Install kernel-source for that purpose and use the header files from that package. Robert -- Robert Schiele Dipl.-Wirtsch.informatiker mailto:rschiele@gmail.com "Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur."

I consider those above mentioned proprietary applications need only headers for building kernel modules, right? Then is it possible to maintain a package with headers only (without sources) for the current kernel? -- Regards, Nikolay Derkach

No, you need the source tree of the kernel to build any new kernel modules against. That's just the way the kernel build system works. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
