[opensuse-factory] openSUSE Leap 42.2 Alpha3 released
Hi, tl;dr 42.2 Alpha 3 is on the mirrors, get it from http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/42.2/iso/ The merge of the SLE12SP2 core components is basically done now. Since SLE enters release candidate phase now we won't see many updates coming from there anymore. So even though it's called Alpha 3 we are on a pretty solid base already. Among the countless leaf package updates, big changes since Alpha 2 were completing the GNOME update, the integration of KDE Plasma 5.7 and Texlive 2015. So time to put Alpha 3 under stress, test it in real world scenarios and file good bug reports!¹ There will be a follow up to this mail with a test plan for manual testing. We have five weeks now to get in shape for for Beta 1. There are quite some things to do: - Help to fix build failures. There are currently 165 failed or unresolvable packages in Leap: http://paste.opensuse.org/8372992 Help is appreciated there to identify the problem, talk to maintainers, file bugs or fix the issues right away. See also the OBS monitor page for the current list² - Fix openQA tests. There are quite some red tests in openQA³. For example some UEFI tests lack actual test code to handle the different dialogs in the bootloader. The update tests also don't work and need debugging. - Decide whether to update your packages in Leap. As usual keep the purpose of Leap and a smooth upgrade path in mind. Don't forget to tell openSUSE marketing about any great new features⁴ or update the release notes if there are glitches⁵. Package submissions for Beta 1 will be considered until August 25. cu Ludwig [1] https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports [2] https://build.opensuse.org/project/monitor?commit=Filter%3A&failed=1&unresolvable=1&defaults=0&arch_x86_64=1&repo_standard=1&project=openSUSE%3ALeap%3A42.2 [3] https://openqa.opensuse.org/group_overview/19 [4] https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-marketing/ [5] https://github.com/openSUSE/release-notes-openSUSE -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.com/ SUSE Linux GmbH, GF: Felix Imendörffer, Jane Smithard, Graham Norton, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

The YaST problems that prevented me from installing Alpha-2 are fixed but another has reared its ugly head. The set-up of wireless connection failed 3 times out of 4. On the only occasion on which it worked, the power supply failed to the laptop on which I was installing it, thus aborting the installation. I made a note of the failure message but have now lost it. Not a good day yesterday. I bypassed the wireless set-up and got a good installation. I then tried setting up wireless using Wicked but the same failure occurred. No problems occurred with NetworkManager. As soon as I have sent this, I'll install Alpha-3 on this machine and endeavour to get some record of the YaST wireless problem. -- Graham Davis, Bracknell, Berks. openSUSE 13.2 (64-bit); KDE 4.14.9; AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor; Kernel: 3.16.7; Video: nVidia GeForce 210 (Driver: nVidia); Sound: ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Done that and, needless to say, Murphy's Law prevailed and I had no failure during installation with the wireless set-up. Perhaps I got the 1-in-5 success 1st time out. I doubt that it's hardware-related else why did it work once on the lap-top? I'll try another machine and then another look at the lap-top may be needed. -- Graham Davis, Bracknell, Berks. openSUSE 13.2 (64-bit); KDE 4.14.9; AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor; Kernel: 3.16.7; Video: nVidia GeForce 210 (Driver: nVidia); Sound: ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It's about testing the distribution, not random, untested, unmaintained 3rd-party repositories... The only one of real interest in this list is Update... and http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.2/oss/repodata/ does have repodata published... so worthy to investigate. Cheers, Dominique

No distribution that lacks both TDE (which depends on Packman) and KDE3 (from which TDE forked) is more than a curiosity to me. KDE, since its most recent restart from scratch called Plasma 5, remains too big a bunch of headaches to depend on, besides having an ugly eyestraining default theme and continuing to lack KDE3 (and/or KDE4) functionality I'm accustomed to with KDE3/TDE. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Is YOUR problem if You use unsupported thirdparty repos in very weird combination KDE3 is full of CVE which nobody solves and KDE4 in short time will be in same state. openSUSE supports lot of VM/DE you may choose

Understood, that's fine, good luck with your future with a new distribution that has TDE in it's official repositories.. I guess that means Debian..oh wait, no, lets check Ubuntu? Nope.. RedHat/CentOS? Doesn't seem so.. Fedora? Oh my, not even them.. Mageia? Nope... Mandriva? Not according to the TDE wiki.. PCLinuxOS? Guess again.. Slackware? Wrong again.. Arch? Not since July 2015.. Your thought box seems to be a bit constrained. One builds one's OS tool starting with the best available distro, one with good foundation in QA, management, track record, YaST and zypper, then adds whatever else is required to get the job done. The label "official" simply isn't relevant. KDE dropped the ball years ago with its first from scratch restart, then did it again, morphing into something very different from what many used to the best grew to depend on. Meanwhile, TDE picked that ball up. That TDE is not a part of any distro is simply not relevant except in lacking opportunity to participate in distro development other than with Stretch. Newer is not equivalent to better. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. This sentence has needlessly overcomplicated logic; not ( ( not TDE ) and ( not KDE3 ) ) <=> ( not not TDE ) or ( not not KDE3 ) <=> TDE or KDE3 Ergo: A distribution with TDE or KDE3 is more than a curiosity. Yep! I agree. That's an incomplete interpretation of its meaning. IOW, any distro that lacks having either one or the other of KDE3 or TDE lacks compelling or serious interest, unless and until either KDE3 or TDE can be added to it. That rules out 42.2 as anything more than a curiosity prior to sometime after it goes GA, whenever the maintainers of TDE for 13.1, 13.2 and 42.1 choose to provide it also for 42.2; or until KDE3, which remains available and usable for TW, is provided also for 42.2. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
