Has anyone compiled MS6 for a VM? The live CD installed on VirtualBox is irritatingly slow and is really heavy on the CPU.

During installation you mean? Live CD @ M6 is a bit overoptimized for large memory and I bet your VB is set to less than 1G

Actually, I've allocated up to 2GB for Gnome, and it's just slow. It's taking up to 4 minutes to boot into the GUI, and I'm not talking about the installation. I've removed Beagle and disabled Flash and that helps some, but the problem is still there.

Routinely. I've been using 11.2 x86_64 in a VMware Workstation instance since Milestone 1. But I've been installing from installation media not a live CD. I've also noticed a heavy CPU problem, but it was traced to a Beagle setting. When the computer goes idle, it goes into a heavy duty scanning mode that pegs CPU. This setting can be turned off. Or beagle can be turned off entirely, your choice.

Installation media? Are you referring to the DVD?

I have a similar problems with LiveCD(not installed), but on the real hardware. Thanks to Coolo it should be fixed in the next build > 0235.
