Re: Nvidia and kernel 5.11 problems
Used zypper dup to upgrade to Tumbleweed 20210311 (kernel 5.11.4-1), after reboot, screen shows Tumbleweed logo, BUT boots to CLI login. Neither X nor KDE starts. Cursory exam of /var/log/zypper.log didn't show any problems (but given volume of data may have missed something), but checking Xorg.log shows (at 1297.567) "Failed to initialize GLX extension (compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)". System worked fine with 5.10.x series of kernels, but no GUI with 5.11 series of kernels. Zypper erased kernel default -5.10.16-1.2.x86_64, so can't fall back to older kernel. Suspect that NVIDIA drivers were not retrieved/loaded, but not sure how to rectify problem Checked /var/log/messages and for 2021-03-03 PackageKit was successful and "plasma-pk-updates" finished successfully. Starting 2021-03-08 showed "PK error" packman "repo-not-available" and "plasma-pk-updates" failed Would greatly appreciate either suggestions for further trouble shooting or a solution to get GUI working again Thanks Paul M. Known issue. To fix it: sudo zypper in -f nvidia-gfxG05-kmp-default On 3/13/21 9:15 PM, Paul M. Livingston wrote:

On my system, this (all of NVIDIA) is up-to-date. But the NVIDIA driver still fails. Are we all still waiting for an update from NVIDIA? I have this installed: No update candidate for 'kernel-firmware-nvidia-20210208-2.1.noarch'. The highest available version is already installed. No update candidate for 'x11-video-nvidiaG04-455.45.01-0.x86_64'. The highest available version is already installed. No update candidate for 'nvidia-glG04-455.45.01-0.x86_64'. The highest available version is already installed. No update candidate for 'nvidia-computeG04-455.45.01-0.x86_64'. The highest available version is already installed. No update candidate for 'nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-default-455.45.01_k4.12.14_lp151.28.36-0.x86_64'. The highest available version is already installed. Or might I have some other issue? It works with an older kernel (5.9 for example). -- Roger Oberholtzer

Fixed packages are meanwhile available thru the official repositories.

Looks like these are coming from NVIDIA's CUDA repository. SUSE never packaged 455.xx drivers let alone by using G04 series. Yes, it is from the NVIDIA repository. I did not think that SUSE packaged the NVIDIA drivers because of licensing things. I thought that there were two options: 1) Install then yourself via the NVIDIA installer (must be done by hand and kept up to date that way), or 2) install from the NVIDIA repository. I have always used method 2. -- Roger Oberholtzer

It's more complicated but I won't go into detail here.

Yes, when using option 2 it's recommended to just add the repository via YaST by selecting it as one of our Community repos. With that you'll end up with one of repos below https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/15.2 https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/15.3 https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/tumbleweed Seems you've found the CUDA repos by nvidia, where they also provide driver RPMs (in addition to the CUDA RPMs) but based these on different sources. http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/ Unless you need CUDA I suggest to switch to the opensuse repositories above. I have this installed: Fixed packages are meanwhile available thru the official repositories. I would say, that even the latest Nvidia driver nvidia-gfxG05-kmp-default-460.67_k5.11.6_1-36.1.x86_64 does not work with the latest kernel-default-5.11.6-1.2.
sudo zypper in -f nvidia-gfxG05-kmp-default installs without issues and the nvidia.ko module is compiled without errors. But the nvidia.ko module loads with errors and Xorg does not start. [ 10.321971] nvidia: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel. [ 10.321985] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. [ 10.339415] nvidia: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel [ 10.403389] nvidia_modeset: Unknown symbol nvidia_register_module (err -2) [ 10.403432] nvidia_modeset: Unknown symbol nvidia_get_rm_ops (err -2) [ 10.403468] nvidia_modeset: Unknown symbol nvidia_unregister_module (err -2) The same nvidia-gfxG05-kmp-default-460.67_k5.11.6_1-36.1.x86_64 compiles and runs fine with older kernels (a custom 5.4.106 kernel in my case). My computer runs with UEFI, but with without secure boot. What does "verification failed: signature and/or required key missing" mean in this case? Greetings, Björn
