[opensuse-factory] Slowness with factory update servers
Is anyone else seeing very slow downloads when trying to update factory packages? For me, it's been going on at least 14 hours now. I have been getting errors such as: Failed to download ./suse/noarch/bundle-lang-kde-en-11.2-19.1.noarch.rpm from http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/ Or very slow (2-5 KB/s) initial downloads on larger (20-25 MB) packages that will slowly speed up as the package is downloading. Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

where are you located on this planet? i've seen this a few times, only once some 6 weeks ago, but i blame it on unreliable internet connection from india, where i'm living. i didn't notice any slowdown during the last couple days, though. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hmm...I'm still seeing the slow behavior now. How can I troubleshoot where the issue is (my end, openSUSE server end, etc.)? Ping response to download.opensuse.org is avg. about 127ms. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

From the Kansas City area, my ping average is 141 ms. Yours should be OK, but that only tests the connections between you and the download site. It could be having congestion problems that were not present yesterday for me.
I just did a 'zypper dup' and got about 90 KiB/s throughput, but only 2 files for a total of 895 KiB were downloaded. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Do remember that for downloads, download.opensuse.org is nothing but a redirector to the mirrors. Try connecting directly to one of the other mirrors (webbrowse to dowload.opensuse.org and click on the mirrors link for a file) ... maybe for some reason the mirror that was selected for you is having problems.

I don't see what you mean when I browse to download.opensuse.org. Where is the mirrors link? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Is there some way to tell what mirror is being used when I try to update using download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss for example and is there some easy way to choose another or something like using 'fastest mirror' like other distros use? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Use `wget` to download one file. That way youi should be able to see what mirror is used. houghi -- ________________________ Open your eyes, open your mind | proud like a god don't pretend to be blind | trapped in yourself, break out instead http://openSUSE.org | beat the machine that works in your head -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Look in the logs. For instance /var/log/zypper.log should have listed what mirror is used, so: grep "(log_redirects_curl)" /var/log/zypper.log will give you all involved mirrors. Here that list has 892 lines. Be aware that redirector (mirrorbrain) at http://download.opensuse.org is using multiple mirrors, even during one 'zypper dup' session, and the case where download is constantly slow can be something else, not a slow mirror. The logic behind mirror selection is quite complex and it takes in account not only "the fastest", but file availability, file size, distance from download location, and probably more. Thanks. I ended up just hard-coding a faster mirror instead of using download.opensuse.org. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Besides the slow, or unreliable, mirror should be reported as Stephan said, using mirror directly you quit using one important security feature that is available only when you use download.opensuse.org. See http://www.cs.arizona.edu/people/justin/packagemanagersecurity/ The repository and package metadata are delivered only from download.opensuse.org, so malicious mirror operator can't replace them with his version. Those repodata that you can find on mirrors are just convenience to cover situation when download.opensuse.org is down for some reason. -- Regards, Rajko OpenSUSE Wiki Team: http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team People of openSUSE: http://en.opensuse.org/People_of_openSUSE/About -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

https://features.opensuse.org/305320 I opened a feature for that ("Show accessed mirror(s)"), but it seems to be in "rejected" state. However, it would be quite essential IMO to maintain mirror ecosystem health for everyone. I don't see how else it could be achieved.
