As an American who lived in the Midwest for half my life, I've known this and found it very funny. While I encountered tumbleweeds a fair bit, I wasn't a farmer. :)

Most people in the central US (especially farmers) would probably find it unpleasant, though.

I saw some of them crossing the road in the middle plain of Spain (the one of Don Quixote) during a wind storm, and for the first time I realized they were dangerous. I had to dodge them with the car. I have not heard much of them since... that was 1985 or so.
