[opensuse-factory] Changing /dev/hda to /dev/sda
New installs recognise IDE disks as /dev/sd, no problem. On this box 10.1 --> 10.2 --> 10.3Alpha3plus via factory updates, my disks come up as /dev/hd. Changed /etc/fstab from /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2 to /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2, changed menu.lst likewise, but on reboot it can't see /dev/sda1, eventually dropping into a shell prompt. As of old rdev used to be able to change the root and swap devices to whatever you wanted for a kernel. It now tells me that /dev/sda1 doesn't exist. The pata_nv and libata modules are loaded. Problem in initrd or grub???? Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Did you run mkinitrd and change the kernel modules?

I would do a full update (booting from Alpha CD) - in that case YaST will do all changes itself for you, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Unless you have a separate /boot partition in which case the *upgrade* will leave you with a system that will not boot. I have reported this in bugzilla. This happened with the 10.3A2 and 10.3A3 upgrades. I don't have a separate /boot partition, so my upgrades have gone OK. The problem could have been with my INITRD script which I've changed from /dev/hda1 to /dev/sda1, a reboot later will be tried. Been there, done that, rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules and 85-mount-fstab.rules, look the same on the new build x86_64 boxes and 10.2 --> 10.3 Alpha3 upgrade x86_64 laptop and on this x86 box. If I use mkinitrd to change rootdev to /dev/sda1, resume to /dev/sda2 and also fstab, sda1 is seen, but only if I leave menu.list pointing to /dev/hda1 as root, sda2 as swap isn't registered. "swapon /dev/hda2" works. When Alpha4 upgrade hits the streets, I'll see what that does. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Hi Sid,
what tells your /boot/grub/device.map That is the where grub looks for translation (hd0) /dev/sda etc.

That was the only missing piece. I got similar problem when I moved 10.3 installation from reiserfs to ext3 partition, changing only /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab, but 10.3 didn't want to boot complaining that it can't find /dev/hda6. Next was /boot/grub/device.map, but now it complained that it can't mount /dev/sda6. Few hours later I learned a lot more about initrd, but problem was solved. It was missing driver for ext3. I did such moves few times before, but at the time I got only reiserfs in use and device was always /dev/hda or /dev/hdb, it was necessary to change only fstab and menu.lst, but this time it was different :-) -- Regards, Rajko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I had forgotten all about device.map, though I'd done "grep hda /boot/grub/*", but missed device.map, consequence of trying to fix stuff when tired. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Not long after I posted I had a look at my INITRD script and saw "-d /dev/hda1" in it, changed it to /dev/sda1, reboot to be done later this evening perhaps.
