[opensuse-factory] RC2 very slow to boot after upgrade from RC1
Hi I did an upgrade from RC1 which was on vbox, to RC2. The upgrade went OK but the system now takes 4 minutes to boot: I see the Welcome to GRUB message and then a fleeting glimpse of an error message. Then a black screen for a long time before the splash appears, then everything is back to normal Any ideas for 1. Where I could get to see the error message (in a log somewhere? I can't find anything like it under /var/log) 2. How to get the boot time down. Thanks L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Ah, I see. OK. the only grep with error or Error coinciding with boot time is this: Aug 7 19:28:08 hh6 udisksd[1424]: Error opening /etc/crypttab file: Failed to open file '/etc/crypttab': No such file or directory (g-file-error-quark, 4) It appears twice but with only a 10 second interval. Then it is probably not related. There is a tool with systemd to "analyze blame", see what service delays boot. There is a table mode and a graph mode. The package is not installed by default in 12.2, I don't remember the name and can't check it now. bombadillo:~ # systemd-analyze --help systemd-analyze time systemd-analyze blame systemd-analyze plot Process systemd profiling information -h --help Show this help - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. It is easier to see with "plot". You redirect it to a file, which is an SVG, and you can view it with "display". - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. OK: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/45150875/plotrc2.svg looks as though it takes 82 seconds. But this represents the time _after_ it has got to the splash I think. The long delay is _before_ we get to the splash. 82 seconds is fine. 5 minutes 22 not so good. . . There does not appear to be too long delays. First is the kernel (15"), lots of things, then the delays start with xdm (9"), sound (12"), remote filesystems (7"), and some other things mixed around. Not a single culprit. This test system I'm playing at (12.1) starts in 50". I can not access my virtual 12.2 now to check. But my kernel in 12.1 starts in 8", sound in 3". Hi Yeah, that seems reasonable to me too. As I say, it's not the boot process itself which I'm concerned about. It's the blank screen just after the welcome to grub 2 message which takes up 4 minutes before systemd get's anywhere near it. This maybe something to do with grub2 on Vbox. 4 minutes? Wow. I'm not familiar with grub2, I don't need it (yet). - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. What is happening in between: Welcome to Grub and Doing fast boot? Whatever it is, it takes 4 minutes. I can not imagine. Can you switch to grub legacy? It looks buggy to me. Looking for something and timing out, probably... - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Could be systemd. Had a case where a filesystem in fstab was not mountable (e.g. because the fstype does not match, or a broken superblock) - and systemd waited out its usual timeout of 60(?) sec before telling me it could not get it mounted.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Switching to grub (not grub 2) boots instantly. The new version also works fine but only on new installs. Upgrades from 12.1 give you the old grub. You also get an ugly boot screen if you use yast in the hope of getting a new shiny grub 2. A bit of a mess. L x

Lynn, I do not know what is happening on your system, but it appears to be something "special" with your computer. Being a troglodyte, plus I generate lots of kernels, I am still using grub legacy, but I converted two real systems to GRUB2 to test. On both, the time between selecting a kernel to boot, and the first output from systemd is 2 to 3 seconds! Next I created a new VBox VM from the KDE Live CD v86_64 12.2 RC2 (Build 91) with grub2 as the bootloader, and did a "zypper up" after the installation. From the VBox BIOS splash screen to the GRUB2 selection screen is also 2-3 seconds. Why your system is hanging for 4 minutes is still a mystery. What version of VBox are you using? Mine is 4.1.18 r78361 that I downloaded from the Oracle web site. Hi Larry, hi everyone. Exactly the same vBox, also from Oracle. I have the guest additions installed too. There is an error which pops up immediately after Welcome to GRUB2 just before the 4 minute delay. If I could get that mesage, I'd be on my way to solving it but i don't think that at that stage any logs are written. Anyway, I'll have a go at the old grub and see if that slves it.
