[opensuse-factory] KDE4.8/QT bug is still there
This bug seems to be getting worse with each release of KDE4 :-( Reported here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275469 and here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=292057 Basic symptoms: - open an application, and it may or may not actually show up in the Task Manager/Panel - close an application and it may or may not be removed from the Task Manager/Panel It essentially makes the Task Manager unreliable and unusable. The KDE guys say it's a bug in QT and there's nothing they can do about it beyond referring it upstream to QT. There appears to be some patches in the works - is there anything we can do from our side to speed this up.. or include the patches (backporting?) to make KDE4 more usable. I've got one more to add to the list - run a full screen application (game) and when you return to the desktop, the panel and the entire desktop will not respond to click for up to 30 seconds although the mouse is working fine, and if I Alt+Tab I can open/use apps that were minimized. At some point, 30 to 45 seconds after exiting the full screen app (game), the desktop is repainted and becomes responsive again. All clicks you made during that period appear to be queued up and a whole lot of things happen at once as things catch up. I haven't yet found a bug report at KDE for this one... not sure on the right keywords for searching. Will keep trying :-P C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

More on this... it's not just a full screen app... it appears to happen with any app I launch... Launch the app, and the whole Panel becomes unresponsive for a short time... a few seconds up to a minute. Re bko#275469: The issue with windows not disappearing from the taskbar has been identified as a Qt bug and resolved. If you're feeling really impatient create a SR or file a bug asking for the patches to be backported to KDE:Qt or something. Re bko#292057: No idea what's going on there, doesn't happen for me. Not a universal problem -> harder to debug. Try the usual steps of new user (hence ruling out config), comparing package versions with someone who doesn't experience the problem, etc. This is a wild guess, but try fiddling with your desktop effects settings - maybe the 'open/close window' effect is interacting badly with your video drivers. Odd... something is different between KDE4.8 from Factory and KDE4.8 from Upstream. When I installed from Upstream, it was really unusable. Last night I pulled it from the Factory repo to try again. So no new user, nothing different from the attempt 4 days earlier, just pulling from the Factory build this time... and everything works OK After install, I logged out and back in. Nepomuk pegged the CPU at 100% for a short time (only 2 or 3 minutes max), and everything works OK now with the Task Manager and Panel. Whatever was broken from the previous install (Upstream) seems to have sorted itself out on last night's install (from Factory). Still testing, but all looks very good, and KDE4.8 is noticeably different/better than 4.7/4.6. So all is good.
