That is exactly my question. I will copy the list after i rebooted, installed all new packages and Kernel.

Personally i do not quite understand the name: 'unneeded packages', especially when i look at the list: kernel-firmware, skype, make, 7zip, etc. But i think those are packages i installed myself, and are not 'part' of the standard install. -- Have a nice day, Oddball. I remember the wish of many people, myself included, that wanted to know which packages just, 'hang around' in the system, and are of no use than just cluttering space. At that time, there were also many dep-solver problems, called 'dependency hell', a night mare to anybody that wanted to upgrade but had like 'alien' packages installed, from outside the distro repos. This has absolutely been approved for about 90-95%, maybe even more, as when upgrading all packages, just now, only *one* dep had to be solved by my choice. But this time install was still young, and not far from original install, so i might be overly enthusiast. No, i am not really concerned, i wast just looking around in yast, to find out what i did not check out before. Start from scratch takes probably more time than i have... I do not see in the list things that you really do not need, worth bothering about them. But you do have kde3 installed. However... do you intend to compile the kernel? If not, you do not need kernel-source. Or compile anything? If not, you do not need make nor checkinstall. Skype is up to you, whether you intend to use it or not. So have you, but that is not relevant. I found out that it is indeed about packages that are not part of the original install. Yes the sources and friends were for to compile a useless ndis-driver: it is in the kernel modules. But i did not know at the time. So now i can not get rid of it, because i can not login as root to desktop. And skype, daily much used app onboard, and installed from original website. -- Have a nice day, Oddball. You do not need to login as root to the desktop to do it. Nobody does it that way if they can avoid it. One of many ways: open a terminal, like xterm, konsole, whatever. Well, if it was that simple i would have done it already. It is mobile partner software, for a huawei modem. The ndis drivers did not install, because they were valid until 112, and arch changed a bit, so the kernel files needed, were on another location, so these drivers did not install, but the ui pops up every time i plug in the device, but can not connect due to the missing drivers. I want to get rid of it. It is not regular, i had to compile it. I do not know what is the command for 'uninstall' so i can not activate the script to do it.

After i ran "init 3" the complete terminal dissappeared, and all that was left was a horizontal blinking dash. Keyboard input gone. So the try to run 'startx' was in vane...

You have to do that while in VT-1. Where you there? If not, type [ctrl][alt][F1] - press those 3 keys simultaneously, and release when it jumps. You have to do what I tell you, not other. You can thank systemd for this. Once you have control back, you can 'zypper in sysvinit-init' and reboot to make the ttys behave as they used to. TTY1, TTY2, TTY3, TTY4, TTY5 & TTY6 should be equivalent. Did you also try Ctrl-Alt-F2, Ctrl-Alt-F3, Ctrl-Alt-F4, Ctrl-Alt-F5 and Ctrl-Alt-F6 to try to find a login prompt? I almost never login on tty1 myself. Well, before grub, just after bios.

I did not find information about it.
I wanted to rescue from the network-install-cd122, but that option is gone.
And since there is no kernel booted in the beginning , this option is 
useless for most people.
Repair, boot installed os, install new bootloader, those things, are 
most valuable.
In my Alpha and Beta testing days, many, many times, i have gratefully 
used these options.
Imho it is not very smart to 'dump' those very good and valuable options.
What is very important is that these tools are made to rescue the system 
for that installation.
Since these tools are gone longer now, i tried to use older versions, 
but they had trouble reading new filesystems, or otherwise could not 
repair certain things.
The most annoying was if they could not repair the bootloader, when an 
installed os could not be booted. In that case a good system became 
unusable, and had to be reinstalled.
And with network-install, that was a disadvantage, because it takes time 
to download everything.

Using openSUSE, always an exiting experience!
