Support for newer version of hplip?

I did purchase the HP Desktop 2720, an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, for which I found a solution for a proper printer driver. However I was unable to install the driver for the scanner. This one is present in the newest version of hplip, however I was unable to build that package for openSUSE. Is it possible to have this newer version supported in openSUSE? I mainly do my work in Tumbleweed. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf

Unfortunately, you make no reference to version numbers you imply. But checking the HP website, the latest version is 3.20.11, which has been in Tumbleweed since Snapshot 20210115. At this time, I don't think anybody can deliver anything newer. cheers, Dominique

It should named Deskjet 2720. And this is included since 30.20.5 It is in tumbleweed but not in leap. Am 26. Januar 2021 12:12:37 MEZ schrieb Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar <dimstar@opensuse.org>:

Thanks. On the website of hplip I found that my all-in-one device should support scanning - indeed from version 30.20.5 -, which I could not configure via "yast scanner". It showed three items one via IP, one via USB and another via its serial number. None of these could be activated. Only after "echo escl > /etc/sane.d/dll.d/escl" from Stefan Brüns a fourth item appeared, which could be used in xsane. Many thanks to all who answered. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf

With some luck you don't need the proprietary, closed source crap (while hplip itself is open, it loads some binary modules for "advanced" functionality, e.g. scanning). Modern MFPs support eSCL aka "AirScan". If your printer does, it should announce itself using DNS-SD, type "_uscan". You can check this with $> avahi-browse _uscan._tcp => + wlp6s0 IPv4 Color LaserJet Pro M479 _uscan._tcp local If it appears, you just have to enable the "escl" sane backend. $> sudo zypper install sane-backends $> echo "escl" | sudo tee /etc/sane.d/dll.d/escl $> cat /etc/sane.d/dll.d/escl => escl $> scanimage -L => device `escl:https://192.168.180.47:443' is a ESCL Color LaserJet Pro M479 flatbed scanner Kind regards, Stefan -- Stefan Brüns / Bergstraße 21 / 52062 Aachen home: +49 241 53809034 mobile: +49 151 50412019

Only for certain printer models. No model that I ever owned needed the proprietary plugin, although (or perhaps because?) I always bought cheap ones. Many HP models just need the cups raster driver and a PPD, or even work in "driverless" mode as you just described. If you install hplip, you'll get some extras like being able to display toner supplies with "hp-toolbox". The many different possibilities how to set up these printers are confusing. Unfortunately we don't have good heuristics to decide which works best. Exactly. Look for an "AirPrint" and "AirScan" compatible MFD and never again bother with crappy vendor drivers :-)

If it appears, you just have to enable the "escl" sane backend.
I seem to remember that when I bought my Brother MFC-L2710DW early last year, the escl backend did not work well with it. The sane-airscan backend from obs://home:pzz/ (which is the upstream author's official build) worked better, by working around peculiarities of the specific model (https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan/issues/39) I just tried and the escl backend still has the problem, so if your AirScan compatible device does not work with escl, make sure to try sane-airscan :-)
$> sudo zypper install sane-backends $> echo "escl" | sudo tee /etc/sane.d/dll.d/escl $> cat /etc/sane.d/dll.d/escl => escl
$> scanimage -L => device `escl:https://192.168.180.47:443' is a ESCL Color LaserJet Pro M479 flatbed scanner
These devices also have an additional advantage as in not needing a printer driver. Just configuring the "driverless" cups driver will make them print fine. I was unable to configure this via YaST's printer module, but then I just enabled the CUPS web frontend and from there it was a piece of cake :-) Best regards, -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman
