I have been trying to get Tumbleweed under Oracle VirtualBox and I cant get it to work. It does not start KDE but ends un in the command prompt for user ID and password. I stick these in but still no KDE. I do a startx but it get a couple of pages of errors. Does anyone have this running successfully? My VirtualBox is at the latest level. The other possibilty is my system is running Windows 10 with the insider preview installed. Win 10 and the preview are also at the latest level. Until next week I will not have a system I can run Tumbleweed native as I am short of PC's at the moment.
Thanks Andy gm1mqe
Do you try startx as root or as user?
For using startx as user, you should set set the suid bit on the X binary. You can use the command
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/Xorg
(run as root) or you can create a file containing the line
/usr/bin/Xorg root:root 4755
inside the directory /etc/permissions.d/ and apply this by issuing
chkstat --system
(as root).
As the maintainer for VirtualBox, I maintain VMs for Tumbleweed Gnome and TW KDE for testing. These VMs have not been upgraded for the 20160625 snapshot due to all the problems associated with that release; however, both load fine with openSUSE 13.2 as the host machine. The only potential problem is that "NAT Network" does not work as that requires an additional program to have suid rights, and security is currently reviewing that request. All other features are working. As it seems that X is not starting correctly, please use the right CTRL and F1 keys to get to a terminal. Log in there and look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. That will give the reason for X failing to start. If possible, copy that to the host system or to a removable device, and post that for us to see.
