I presume I need to change hdb to sdb, hda to sda and sdb to sdc. With the above, somehow it did the translation.
That was the only missing piece.
I got similar problem when I moved 10.3 installation from reiserfs to ext3 partition, changing only /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab, but 10.3 didn't want to boot complaining that it can't find /dev/hda6.
Next was /boot/grub/device.map, but now it complained that it can't mount /dev/sda6. Few hours later I learned a lot more about initrd, but problem was solved. It was missing driver for ext3.
I did such moves few times before, but at the time I got only reiserfs in use and device was always /dev/hda or /dev/hdb, it was necessary to change only fstab and menu.lst, but this time it was different :-)
I had forgotten all about device.map, though I'd done "grep hda /boot/grub/*", but missed device.map, consequence of trying to fix stuff when tired. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ...
