On an Athlon-XP I got automatically glibc.i686 long time ago, so it seems at this time there was a mechanism to select the best fitting version.
That works because glibc.i686 is a different rpm architecture than glibc.i586, but still the same package, and rpm knows that i686 is compatible with the hardware.
I think I did not get kernel-pae automatically.
Here kernel-pae is a different package than kernel-default, and rpm has no builtin information to prefer the former over the latter, or to install kernel-pae in the first place. -- Andreas Schwab, SUSE Labs, schwab@suse.de GPG Key fingerprint = 0196 BAD8 1CE9 1970 F4BE 1748 E4D4 88E3 0EEA B9D7 "And now for something completely different."
