I'm not sure how to specify a valid non-ssl mirror automatically or to choose one manually. Seeing how my connection seems to go from normal to SSL during the 1 GET, I'm not sure how to tell if I'm going to get a non-SSL site or not.
You can try this new experimental download redirector: http://mirrorcache-us.opensuse.org/download/ as it runs in Provo, it could give better performance for US users.

It works most of the time, but about 10% of the time, it will
jump to the SSL kernel mirror as below -- can see attempt to d/l

first to the provo mirror, then a redirect to what may be a
bad or flakey mirror (http://sfo-korg-mirror.kernel.org) -- which
doesn't have it -- in that case, I'll see a 'CONNECT' line, like
below, that fails.
In cases where the mirror works, it either serves it
itself, or sends it to a working mirror that has the object.
Only when the 1st is the sfo-kernel mirror and when it fails
does it get sent to the SSL mirror.
