Possibly not common, but I've done it. And the whole concept of using a raspberry pi as a server is similar. Isn't systemd's behavior disableable?
No. This is a built-in feature which can not be switched on or off by the user. The only way out would be to write a small program that creates an inhibit for systemd to activate the suspend upon lid close. This is what the major desktops have implemented, so that the desktop is in control of what happens. This is normally done in the powermanagers. However the systemd behavior already occurs long before the desktop environment is up, so an additional startup program would be needed.
