Various drivers (that are installed) are loaded. But only one is used. And if nouveau doesn't support your card, it will be loaded, but not used. Anyway, I see no point in discussing this further. Xorg.0.log would show what really happens/happened.
Hm. Maybe try to run "mkinitrd" then to make sure the new firmware is part of the initrd.
Doesn't kernel installation always trigger a mkinitrd?
The kernel installation does, yes. But I don't think the installation of kernel-firmware does, so there may still be the older version in the initrd after you update kernel-firmware.
