Check your /etc/nsswitch.conf - do you happen to have a .rpmnew
lingering around there with a diff?
Ha! Mine has
passwd: compat sss
as content, which is probably why an rpmnew was produced in the first place,
because that rpmnew tries to match and apply this logic:
+passwd: compat usrfiles
(which it obviously can't).
