After some more testing, it's obvious that the "slowness" and locking up of the 11.1b5 KDE 4.1 desktop is either the Intel video driver or problems in "x"....I suspect the later.

As in my 11.1B5 review post, I can't put my finger on the problem, but I notice it. Especially when working with KDE control center. I assumed the subsystem, being "x" because there are the same problems on systems with other video than Intel.
Fred
I have an nvidia 8800GT and I saw it with the fbdev (frame buffer), nv and nvidia drivers. I still see it with the graphics system fully configured and the graphics performance under 11.1 is 50% what it is under 11.0 kde3. On 11.1 Beta 5 I get:
21:13 arete~> glxgears 20919 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4183.754 FPS 22198 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4439.556 FPS 21181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4236.142 FPS
I get over 10,000 FPS in 10.3 and over 9,000 FPS in 11.0. There is something wrong with the Graphics subsystem.
Fred, I think it's KDE4. I loaded KDE3 tonight on the same box and just on a whim, in KDE3: 01:08 arete~> glxgears 31248 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6237.533 FPS 30700 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6139.998 FPS 29088 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5817.566 FPS 28206 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5595.628 FPS 28717 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5740.827 FPS 27854 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5570.760 FPS 28236 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5647.170 FPS 29807 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5953.829 FPS 29799 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5956.565 FPS 29687 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5930.866 FPS -- David C.
