So, in my case I have an Nvidia graphics card. So I first blacklisted "nouveau" using the command
echo "blacklist nouveau" >> /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
Next I down the latest driver from nvidia.com. This is followed by shutdown and reboot to init 3
Install the driver and reboot. Now I would be able to use all of the effects, 3D etc.
The "reboot" is unnecessary, just start X.
