Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,
This week, Tumbleweed ‘only’ delivered 5 snapshots. Snapshot 0423 was
tested in openQA when 0424 finished the building way faster than
expected. As usual: nothing was lost and the delay added to get the
goodies from 0423 was just a few hours.
The five snapshots (0421, 0422, 0424, 0425, and 0426) brought you these
updates:
* ffmpeg 4.4.4 and ffmpeg 5.1.3
* grep 3.10
* libxml 2.10.4
* pam 1.5.2.90
* Mozilla Firefox 112.0.1
* Linux kernel 6.2.12
* GNOME 44.1 (mutter and gnome-shell will follow over the weekend)
* KDE Gear 23.04.0
* Qt 5.15.9
* llvm 16.0.2
* Rust 1.69
* GCC 13RC3
The various package maintainers have submitted the following changes,
which are currently being tested in staging areas:
* openSUSE:Factory will change from suse_version == 1599 to
suse_version == 1699 (stepping ahead of the ALP code base)
* Mozilla Firefox 112.0.2
* OpenVPN 2.6.3
* Linux kernel 6.3
* Boost 1.82.0
* ICU 73.1: breaks libqt5-qtwebengine
* Wayland 1.22.0: crashes Firefox
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1826583, fixed for FF
113)
* openSSL 3.1: still broken are nodejs19, perl-Protocol-HTTP2,
python-aiohttp, python-tornado6
Cheers,
Dominique

Hi all,
It has been almost one week since we started the thread sharing SUSE's
plans for ALP and opening the door for discussions about what openSUSE
will build based on it [1]
Given the thread got (understandably) long, I wanted to take this
opportunity to summarise where we stand today:
- There seemed to be general consensus to SUSE's plan to offer openSUSE
branded 1:1 equivalents of their ALP "Server" Products (currently known
as Bedrock and Micro)
- APlanas suggested openSUSE should not build anything based on SUSE
ALP, but instead focus on adapting Factory (and MicroOS/MicroOS Desktop)
to be more ALP like [2]
- I replied that I believe Alberto's suggestions to be inevitable but
something to be done AFTER we're sure the community is building from ALP
everything it wishes to [3]
- Simon Lees suggested an openSUSE ALP Product that would be
Tumbleweed/Leap like but focused on one of the lighter desktops like
XFCE. This seemed to be mostly to mitigate the developer/maintenance
requirements in the absence of being able to draw from SUSE-developed
Desktop packages as in the past [4]
- Lubos suggested an openSUSE ALP Product that would be like "old Leap",
but forking from Tumbleweed anything that cannot be provided by
SUSE:ALP. The biggest fears/threats to this idea include a possible lack
of interested contributors, and a lack of resources for maintenance and
QA [5]
There has not been many/any voices speaking up in support for either
Simons or Lubos' suggestions.
Lubos' suggestion in particular really will require broad support from
lots of groups within the community, including
- Maintenance
- QA
- All the teams behind the Desktop stacks wanting to be included (KDE,
GNOME, et al)
- And possibly most devel project maintainers, depending on details like
the cadence of forking from Tumbleweed, they could find themselves
needing to maintain versions in this openSUSE ALP "old Leap" for some
years (I'd estimate upto 5), and not be able to benefit from SUSE's work
in this area as they did with SLE+Leap because ALP will likely often
most such things containerised.
Therefore it would be really nice if people from the above groups,
either individually or with one person speaking for the whole teams,
could speak up and let us all know how they feel about this proposal, so
we can get a better feeling about how viable it may be.
Regards,
Richard

==== coreutils ====
Version update (9.2 -> 9.3)
Subpackages: coreutils-lang
- update to 9.3:
Bug fixes:
* cp --reflink=auto (the default), mv, and install
will again fall back to a standard copy in more cases.
Previously copies could fail with permission errors on
more restricted systems like android or containers etc.
[bug introduced in coreutils-9.2]
* cp --recursive --backup will again operate correctly.
Previousy it may have issued "File exists" errors when
it failed to appropriately rename files being replaced.
[bug introduced in coreutils-9.2]
* date --file and dircolors will now diagnose a failure to read a file.
Previously they would have silently ignored the failure.
[This bug was present in "the beginning".]
* md5sum --check again correctly prints the status of each file checked.
Previously the status for files was printed as 'OK' once any file had passed.
This also applies to cksum, sha*sum, and b2sum.
[bug introduced in coreutils-9.2]
* wc will now diagnose if any total counts have overflowed.
[This bug was present in "the beginning".]
* `wc -c` will again correctly update the read offset of inputs.
Previously it deduced the size of inputs while leaving the offset unchanged.
[bug introduced in coreutils-8.27]
* Coreutils programs no longer fail for timestamps past the year 2038
on obsolete configurations with 32-bit signed time_t, because the
build procedure now rejects these configurations.
[This bug was present in "the beginning".]
Changes in behavior:
* 'cp -n' and 'mv -n' now issue an error diagnostic if skipping a file,
to correspond with -n inducing a nonzero exit status as of coreutils 9.2.
Similarly 'cp -v' and 'mv -v' will output a message for each file skipped
due to -n, -i, or -u.
New features:
* cp and mv now support --update=none to always skip existing files
in the destination, while not affecting the exit status.
This is equivalent to the --no-clobber behavior from before v9.2.
- drop fix-reflink-fallback.patch (upstream).

Hi,
Where are the post build checks coming from? There are some problems
which are coming up only in SLES 12 post build checks of syslog-ng:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/live_build_log/home:czanik:syslog-ng-git…
I do weekly builds on openSUSE / SLES, and it's only then when these
problems are found. My colleagues wonder, if they could run the same
check in the syslog-ng CI. So, problems could be found before a PR is
merged.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to write this mail to let everyone know the current status of
SUSE's ALP (Adaptable Linux Platform) efforts and hopefully get the ball
rolling with openSUSE making use of these efforts.
This is a long mail, but I've done my best to be brief and shift the
more esoteric technical detail as an appendix for those most interested
in contributing.
First, I want to clear up "What is SUSE ALP?"
SUSE ALP is not a single new product by SUSE, in the same way that SLE
isn't a single product.
Just like now where SUSE has SLES, SLED, SLE Micro, SLE for SAP and
more, SUSE ALP is a 'platform' that is going to produce whole families
of products.
The key defining difference between SLE and ALP though is that SUSE is
building ALP with "Adaptability" being an absolute core aspect.
This should reduce or eliminate the situation we often see with SLE,
where products are 'stuck' using the same versions of core components
like glibc and python for the whole lifespan of a codebase.
With ALP, SUSE will be building things in a way where different ALP
products can have different versions of core components, be supported
for different lengths of times, and with old versions of those
components be removed when they're no longer needed.
This is also why you do not hear about a singular ALP 'codebase',
because the way ALP Products are built they potentially could draw from
multiple codebases, potentially with very different lifecycles; eg. One
ALP Product may be what most would call a very 'stable' distribution,
another could be 'rolling', and a third could be a hybrid between the
two.
I feel this is the most exciting thing about ALP, and it's the most
interesting engineering aspect of ALP as it dramatically changes HOW we
build these products in OBS. See the appendix for details.
So, if ALP is not a single product, what is SUSE building?
SUSE's current efforts are focused on two SUSE ALP products, which you
can currently see in OBS as SUSE:ALP:Products:Bedrock and :Micro.
These names are unlikely to be final, but they are expected to be
server-focused products, heavily leaning on transactional-updates and
containerisation to even further push the core "Adaptability" goals of
ALP; It's far easier to shift and swap what versions of libaries are in
play when (almost) everything using them is containerised and the OS is
being thought of as a cohesive unit that is updated in atomic operations
These will not be the only two products SUSE builds from ALP, but it's a
starting point.
Going forward, just like for the SLE family of products, the primary
build environment for these products is going to have to be SUSE's
internal build service. This is so SUSE can have these commercial ALP
offerings certified the way they are required to be.
However, we want ALP, both the code AND the different way of building
things, to be available to openSUSE and ideally reused/adapted for
openSUSE's own offerings. We still want to build ALP in the _open_ in
addition to what we need to do for SUSE's commercial offerings.
Therefore, the current working plan is as follows:
- All SUSE ALP Products will be built in SUSE's Internal Build Service,
using sources that originated from openSUSE:Factory
- All packages used to build SUSE ALP Products will be copied to
openSUSE's Open Build Service without alteration
- All SUSE ALP Products will be copied from SUSE's IBS to openSUSE's
OBS with the only alterations being the obvious necessary rebranding
- Any future changes to the SUSE's ALP development workflow (eg. the
possible future introduction of a git-based workflow for submitting
changes into IBS/OBS) would be also introduced for any openSUSE ALP
Products
This should all sound very familiar because it's very similar in concept
to what we already do with Leap Micro
I would like to make the following suggestion to openSUSE on the next
steps it could take to extend the above.
Any new openSUSE distribution, such as the ones discussed as
https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:16.0 or
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:ALP/Workgroups/GrassyKnoll should be
built as seperate "Products" using the new ALP way of building things.
The ALP concept should be flexible enough that these openSUSE Products
will be able to leverage all the stuff SUSE is doing for SUSE's ALP
Products, but then we (community) can add anything we want. If we find
it is not flexible enough, then we (SUSE) will work to adapt it to make
it possible for the community to build what it wants.
So, if we the community want to build something like old Leap, that
should be totally technically feasible.
I can certanly imagine the community building something with a stable
release cadence and that doesn't use transactional-updates and
containers to run everything.
If that's the direction we as a community want to go, we should be able
to get started soon when the above is in place in OBS.
The biggest challenge I forsee would be ensuring we have enough people
to maintain all the packages in that 'old fashioned' way of doing
things, especially with SUSE going in a different direction...but that
has always been an aspect of openSUSE's way of doing things.
I could also see a future where we take this opportunity to try
something like an ALP-based take on the MicroOS Desktop, more polished,
opinionated and less 'tinkering friendly' than old Leap. I'd imagine
that would certainly be possible; also, maybe in parallel, if people
want to build it.
This approach would also tie in nicely with all the awesome work the
Agama (formerly known as 'D-Installer') team have been doing, as we
should be able to offer a single installation ISO that offers all the
combined "openSUSE ALP" offerings, including the 1:1 openSUSE copies of
SUSE's Products as well as any additional ones built purely by openSUSE.
This would potentially cut out a lot of the work needed for the
openSUSE-only Products as (speaking from experience), creating and
maintaining installation media is often the biggest pain.
What does everyone think?

APPENDIX Below
---
Brief technical details about how ALP is currently built.
If the above proposal is widely accepted then openSUSE would mimic the
below, just obviously replacing SUSE: with openSUSE:
SUSE:ALP:Workbench:<workbench_version>
This project effectively does the same job as Factory Rings 0 and 1,
being a frozen copy of packages needed to bootstrap everything else.
These packages are frozen from openSUSE:Factory
SUSE:ALP:Source
The main project for OBS prjconfig
SUSE:ALP:Source:Standard
ALP supports the concept of multiple codebase velocities. "Standard" is
the default that SUSE is currently building, but there may be faster or
slower velocities going forward. openSUSE may also have it's own in
addition. I can totally imagine Tumbleweed evolving to become something
like SUSE:ALP:Source:Fast someday. This project includes sources but is
not built.
SUSE:ALP:Source:Standard:Core:<core_version>
Core system packages (linked from SUSE:ALP:Source:Standard) and generic
containers to be used across multiple ALP products are built here
SUSE:ALP:Products:<product_name>:<product_version>[:<product_minor_version>]
This is where the product definitions and patterns live.
Each product builds against a
SUSE:ALP:Source:<velocity>:Core:<core_version> project
Additional packages specific to a product are allowed
Ideally packages should be submitted to and linked from :Core: by
default (to allow package sharing between products) but exceptions can
be made. For openSUSE-only products, such exceptions might be the norm.
Containers, VM images, etc specific to a Product are all defined and
built here.
SUSE:ALP:Products:<product_name>:<product_version>[:<product_minor_version>]:Update
If a product will be maintained using a SLE/Leap-like maintenance
process, then this would be the Update project for such a process.

My point is that if you drag all these changes out, it's going to be
harder to make it successful. Let's just do them all at once and get
everyone fixing everything all at once. That scales better and takes
less overall effort.
If you feel like you're going to have a hard time here, compressing
the time range to uplift C code is going to go better.

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers.
The ports for i586 and powerpc are in need of help to get back into a
rolling state.
i586 is currently blocked on not having any firefox builds available:
https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1210168
On ppc64, the port was released despite not having firefox available in
December (nobody seems to care?)
https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1206624
I'm sure the firefox maintainer and users would appreciate all your
help to get those builds back into shape.
Thanks in advance,
Dominique

## openSUSE Tumbleweed
openSUSE:Factory build fail stats: 74 failed 3 unresolvable (one week
ago: 73 / 3)
https://tinyurl.com/ysy4nnnz
* Ruby 3.1 and all ruby3.1- rubygems have been removed from Tumbleweed
* KDE Gear 23.04.0 shipped
* Linux kernel 6.3 currently staged - some 'weird' build fails showing
up
* Boost 1.82 - breaking libzypp; fix in progress
* Staging:C: openssl 3.1 incoming; a few packages failing to build
Dominique: seems like factory would be interested in the even updates
of python, not the odd ones. python3.12 has to be released first :-)
## Richard (MicroOS)
System Updates notifications should (finally) be working properly by
default now. Anyone with custom workarounds in /etc should remove them.
The MicroOS Desktop Plasma/KDE is stil in desperate need of help else
could be at risk of being dropped (again)

Summit (LAS) 2023 regarding the flatpak / flathub adoption in MicroOS.

## Richard (ALP Architecture)
Summarised discussions with the openSUSE community about building
'whatever replaces Leap' in a way that is aligned with SUSE's new ALP
Products
https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/factory@lists.opensuse.org/thread/…
The general direction seems to be towards building a Leap-like product
(Desktops, not immutable, etc) based on ALP (and Tumbleweed?) Sources
The biggest challenges facing this plan all revolve around having
sufficient contributions, as (compared to Leap) this concept will need
a lot more work as will have less already done by SUSE
lkocman: I'm not even sure if interlock would be possible, like if we
will get any actual 0.X numbers.
Would very much appreciate folk from Maintenance, QA, Desktop Teams,
and ideally also most devel Projects speaking up about how much they
will support this effort, what challenges they see, what they'd like to
see changed to make it more viable for them, etc.
lkocman: additionally docs team (RN) and legal (IPRQ, EULA, cavil), I
can personally live without FTE from e.g. SUSE Branding team (currently
0.2FTE).
rbrown: docs - sure, but we need to know the scope of the Project
first, so they can wait. Legal also - legal needs are likely to be much
smaller if there is little/no migration between "Leap 16" and any SUSE
Product
## Max
Leap 15.5(build stats in Backports: 1 unresolvables, 7 fails. Prehaps
thoese failing package will not be fixed before GA, I've tested them
that they're installable and executable though)
* Fixed the python2 script interpreter issue
* More uninstallable package are removed from ftp-tree according to the
repodata installcheck result
* Started RC work
** The next snapshot would've SLE15 SP5 RC2 changes included
** Beta mark is removed from the product and openqa medium config
** Update 15.5 server list to d.o.o on github
https://github.com/openSUSE/download.o.o/pull/43, but it needs
https://opensuse-community.org/openSUSE_Leap_155_Community_Additional.xml
as https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/113959 described, I'm not sure
who is maintain that file
** Waiting for doc team to upload a 15.5 release-notes rpm to doc.o.o
* Other than the critical fix or the ship-stopper fix, I'll not check-
in upcoming SR, and ask resubmit it to update
I'll reach out to commnity additional folks, we might want to add
openh264 there too (would help existing installations).

No update
Improved the CDN setup a bit further (https working now, caching issues
fixed) and in progress of collecting in put from early testers. It
looks like we have more issues to resolve.
Did a strategic benchmarking exercise with various zypper options and a
huge part of the slowness appears to be related to the choices of
zypper options. In evaluation with zypper folks. A > factor 5
improvement even for european is possible over current setup. Other
locations could be better.
Sarah can provide mainframe acess - he has received VM from Sarah

Biggest speedup can be observed by switching zlib to zlib-ng, so
looked into fixing the build failures caused by switching to zlibo-ng-
compat
## Wolfgang (Package Hub), Scott Bahling

lkocman: any immediate actions that we need to address for Package HUB
for SLES 15 SP6?
* we might discuss package dependencies to other modules or paid
extensions
## Maintenance team (Marcus or Maurizio (m4u))
Leap Micro 5.4 maint-setup is active.
Leap 15.5 setup is done, SLE export channel is still being refreshed
occasionaly.
Key rotation:
openSUSE:Leap:15.5 is done, Backports are bit more challenging because
of SLES.
Wolfgang: we're injecting the key. Marcus we probably want to do only
Backports 15 SP5 for now.
Marcus is working also on the SLES side, the update of package with the
new key was released last week, it's just not activated yet, but it
will be already trusted by Leap 15.5 systems.
Leap 15.4 is working
Leap Micro 5.3 is working
Leap Micro 5.4 testing is now passing as well
Leap 16.0 - we should revisit the update/sle repo as the current setup
not exactly mirror friendly. Solutions could be dropping not so popular
architectures or split repositories per architecture.
securebootkey for SLES was rotated, it should be autotrusted and not
noticeable. This will be in QU3, QU2 is already done.
lkocman: 15.3 EOL could lead to stopping our physical Source DVD
effort, as it seems we will not produce. As this was the last release
which you could still get on a physical media.
Lkocman: anything against decomissioning it?
Not a single valid request since I've joined SUSE. We did receive only
requests for binary install media which are not subject to ^. We do not
plan to offer this for any new releases.
## Adrian - OBS
No updates
DimStar pointed Adrian to issue handled by Marco - unresolvables due to
python3.8 drop. So far it seems like a scheduler issue. Just wait for
fix, local builds are not affected.
