[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed - Review of the week 2020/37
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 11 Sep '20
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 11 Sep '20
11 Sep '20
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,
Based on my gut feeling, I’d claim week 37 was a bit quieter than other
weeks. But that might be due to the fact that I had some day off in the
middle of the week, where I only did a check-in round, but not actually
pushing on the Stagings. Some of you might have seen that Richard Brown
has been helping out on this front, which can just be another reason
for things to look more relaxed for me. But let’s look at the 6
snapshots (0904, 0905, 0906, 0907, 0908, and 0909) we released during
this week.
The changes included were:
* KDE Plasma 5.19.5
* KDE Applications 20.08.1
* LibreOffice 7.0.1.2 (aka 7.0.1rc2)
* Mesa 20.1.7
* Libvirt 6.7.0
That leaves the list of things being worked out in stagings almost the
same:
* systemd 246
* glibc 2.32
* binutils 2.35
* gettext 0.21
* bison 3.7.1
* SELinux 3.1
Cheers,
Dominique

## Leap
Invited SLE Migrations QA team to CtLG weekly updates. As migrations Leap -> SLE and Leap -> Jump are one of hottest topics.
Met with cups team lead last Wednesday to agree on some next steps with cups maintenance.
We have pre-agreed on a long term and short term solution.
Working on policy documents for https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Jump namely https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Jump/Policy/ChangeValidation and https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Suse_sle_review_team
My focus will be mainly on supportive documents for the mini interlock (go/nogo for October Leap 15.2.1 release), I'll have to announce some roadmap for this effort).
poo#70951 - Agree on scope of review/testing for incoming changes from SLE before the product image gets build.
Another high priority tasks for me:
poo#70960 - Agree on what can be delivered by end of October
poo#70957 - Maintenance setup for Jump
poo#70954- Agree on the scope of co-operation of Package Hub and Release team for incoming changes to Backports
## openSUSE Tumbleweed
* The DNS issues on openQA have mostly been resolved (new DNS in the SUSE/DMZ is referenced) - except the new DNS server filters out dnssec records which causes some few issues in tests. We still have ariel configured to use Google's DNS Servers for now
* we enabled obs-changesdiff on TW, but so far not consumed
* Other than that, TW is rolling normally at the moment.
## ddemaio
* GSoC complete
* openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference
* Schedule made
* Waiting on confirmation of keynotes
* Beta T-Shirts being shipped
* RustFest sponsorship (tickets available)
## Dirk
Not present
We need to have a closure on the topic. Dirk will send email, we have to start with Tumbleweed and document it.
Feedback regarding 5% of build failures seems to be seen as too relaxed.
Ludwig: Perhaps having build failure for more than x-weeks on Ring:0/Ring:1 or any submission to it (:Adis) could retract the state.
Dominique: ppc64le was blocking stagings for a week until we could get build done. Otherwise we usually have it done in few days.
Richard: we have to have Ring0/Ring1 always working. If we don't have the infra for :Staging than we can't make architecture Tier1.
Dirk: We do not have this detail (topic above) documented.
Ludwig: It's implicit.
Dirk: Agreement with Guillaume on aarch64/TW is that architecture is treated as a primary.
Dominique: We have a current agreement to have aarch64 images next to x86_64, not necessarily as treat it as primary, that would then be outcome of this effort.
Ludwig: we may be aiming for 3 tier policy, not the 2 tier policy. With x86_64 being the reference.
Ludwig: let's have followup discussion on mailing list.
## Guillaume - Arm
Tumbleweed:
* Still the GNOME X11 bug: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1168992
* TTM config needs some update. Max and Dirk are on it.
Jump: is in better shapes, but still few issues to address:
* openSUSE vs SUSE signing keys for Secureboot: https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/69832
* VLC is missing on aarch64: https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1175972
* FPC is still missing on aarch64 because it is not built in PackageHub for aarch64. FPC 3.2.0 (which includes an auto-bootstrap process) is on the way to Leap:15.2:Update: https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/833046 PackageHub will be able to pick it up soon. https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1176175
WSL: WIP to have WSL on aarch64 on https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:Guillaume_G:WSL The goal is to have WSL-DistroLauncher package built for aarch64.

## Max
* The branding-upstream issue has been fixed for XFCE and LXDE
* Updated repository URL in skelcd-control-openSUSE, and due to $releasever we need to change online repository url from jump/15.2 to jump/15.2.1
Lubos: https://jira.suse.com/browse/PM-2094 - Allow vendor change from openSUSE -> SUSE, SUSE -> openSUSE on the Leap installation media.
Still pending
:ToTest publishing happens it was just triggered manually by Adrian. We do publish from :ToTest to staging.
Publish ftp-prod is blocked on admin(a)opensuse.org request.
Lubos and Max to check on this topic. There is a ticket
Adrian re-published Jump manually due to work regarding release-compare/obsgendiff
## Michel

## Ludwig
kernel-default-base and kernel-rt did not release updates.
Lubos to reach out to Marcus M.
Max: question regarding Leap kernel-rt and kernel-default-base is it also in Leap:15.1:Update.
Ludwig: It's not implemented only in openSUSE Leap:15.2:Updates
Leap 15.2 MicroOS is temporarily paused.
## Adrian - Jump
work on osc plugin to mirror the request from OBS (JUMP) -> IBS (SLE) has started see https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Suse_sle_review_team
release-compare has now https://github.com/openSUSE/release-compare
so far no changes on release-compare
Adrian: Dimstar can you give us feedback?
Dimstar: last changelog is 29 MB
## Overview of Commmunity SLE Feature Requests (See details inhttps://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Leap/SLEFeatureRequests )
(This section will be newly part of ReleaseEngineering meeting minutes)
* Hardware enablement printing/scanners: Update sane to 1.0.29 (PM-2118) - Pending ECO approvals
- Pending PM Evaluation
- Aiming for maintenance update for SLE-15-SP2:Update. Pending ECO Approvals.
* DNF for SLE / Leap Next (PM-2044) - Status is NEW
- List of benefits was put together by Neal Gompa and Daniel Mach
- Request was raised to PM attention
- A lot of discussion over the entire July (this topic got really good visibility).
A TODO list from mls that is making it really difficult
No offering of solutions if there are dependency problems (dnf just exits)
No concept of package vendors
No support for products
Completely different handling of maintenance updates, i.e. no support of patches
No support for patterns
No support for translations
No support for modalias() supplements to install needed kernel modules
No support for language supplements
metalink support in librepo only for a complete repository, i.e not file based. This does not fit our download redirector
No support for services
No support for product licenses
No support for L3 tags
Different lock handling
Does not understand a repo consisting of multiple media
I don't see how YaST can work with libdnf
* Update Remmina to 1.4.8 (PM-2181)
- Waiting for PM evaluation
* Add python 3.8 support (PM-1482) - New awaiting PM evaluation
- Originally requested for Blender but, now it seems like people generally ask for 3.8 to be available.
- Notified PM that this topic is getting attention
- Packaging team is working on py38 39 etc via koinstall
- python38 request for Factory https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/openSUSE:Factory:Staging:B
* Please update glibc to 2.29 or newer (PM-2030) - Under Evaluation
- Originally reported as https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1173761
- Deferred to the next release, can't be done as a maintenance update.
- Currently under evaluation for SLE 15 SP3. PM is in favor of the request.
* Update Apparmor to 2.13.4 (PM-1983) - In Progress, TPM Evaluation is done
Defered to SP3
Hi Lubos, apparmor in SLE15 SP2 is already at 2.13.4. However, it is not at what Christian wants it to be. Christian has put a big patch called changes-since-2.13.4.diff to upgrade it. This was agreed to be released in SP3
* lqxt-build-tools update to 0.7.0 (PM-1914) - DONE
- Deferred to SP3
* add authselect for managing auth stack configuration (PM-1881) - Pending PM Evaluation
- Aiming for 15 SP3
- PM generally likes the idea, we're looking for a feedback from Security team. Security team wants to hear feedback from Architect as there seems to be an overlap with pam-config.
- Thorsten (Architect) mentioned that we'll have to find resources for pam-config modification as he doesn't have time for it. Any help from community side would be appreciated!
* Update libcdio required by python-pycdio 2.1.0 and whipper (PM-1801) - Approved
- Will be implemented in SP3:GA

3.0 Priority items and blockers
* https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1173582 - Migration blocker
* Agree on scope of review/testing which is needed for changes coming via SLE sync (IBS -> OBS).https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/70951
^ Feel free to add any ideas if you think that the current plan to trigger botmaster pipeline which then would report the "diff" wouldn't be sufficient.

^ Let's not leave it all to just package hub crew. We are here to help!
* Maintenance setup for Jump/Leap 15.2.1 https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/70957

===================================
4.0 Updates from individual teams
===================================
4.1 openSUSE Leap Release Management
Owner: Lubos Kocman
Pending review of https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Jump/Policy/ChangeValidation
Jump to SLE 15 SP2 prior October "release". Still pending will be done next week.
I received a complain for not advertising enough Jump prototype availability https://news.opensuse.org/2020/08/28/alpha-prototype-jump-is-available-tumb…
* s390x still looking for openSUSE Jump / Leap rel-eng
Berthold attended first rel-eng call with no commitment yet.
* Currently open topic with openSUSE Board on having non-SUSE Employee as a "project maintainer". Gerald sees no reason why the Board would object (and isn't convinced this even falls into the realm of the board) and will respond to Lubos' mail. Next step would be an internal discussion with Security, Autobuild and Legal.
===================================
4.2. openSUSE Leap Release Engineering
Owner: Max Lin, Guillaume, Michel
Max:
* skelcd-control-openSUSE has been updated - the default installed repositories list should be correct now
* pending work on openQA for the repository url change Leap -> Jump
* openqa results looks ok
Jump 15.2.1 bump happened - We will keep 15.2 for services which may otherwise have issues with the 15.2.1 version.
Guillaume:
Still some AArch64 specific regressions from 15.2 to Jump.
* VLC is missing on aarch64: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1175972
^ Backports is build only for x86_64. This was already case for gdb on aarch64.
* FPC compiler is missing for aarch64: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1176175 this breaks gdb (and probably more): https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/70393 The update to fpc 3.2.0 (which includes an auto-bootstrap process) has been released on Leap:15.2:Update,so PackageHub should be able to fetch it now. Also keep in mind that fpc fails to build on ThunderX2 machines: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1122855 so the build may require few manual rebuilds.
Michel: same missing vlc for ppc64le/x86_64 for openQA tests.
Let's get a list of packages that have to be rebuild in Jump as they still contain branding (should not be that many). These packages should have a CtLG Feature requests in jira.suse.com. Still pending
lkocman: to open task in progress-o-o
Frederic: there was a bug in gnome-shell that should be fixed already
Adrian already re-published project manually but there is still some work left to have it "implemented". Still pending. Lubos: to check o the opensuse-admin issue.

4.4 Autobuild
Owner: Rüdiger Oertel Adrian Schroeter
Not present
Marco is working on the osc packtrack which should help us to see product changes that happened in between builds or over some period of time.
===================================
4.5 Maintenance
Owner: Stephan Barth
Maintenance setup for Jump/Leap 15.2.1 https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/70957
Marcus: needs to know how to set it up, so we can setup announce tools.
The current way we think is that we would aggregate updates from SLE, openSUSE Backports and Jump for any branding/pattern/000* changes. This could be perhaps then aggregated to a single repository, so user does not end up with subscribing to 3 different repositories.
Marcus: the backports parts seem to be weird, because the backports repo has a lower quality.
https://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Portal:Jump/Policy/ChangeValidation - reference to backports
Marcus is currently concerned about quality of the backports as there is no openQA
Marcus agrees on the mini-interlock idea currently aiming signoff to mid of October 2020.
Stefan is fine with mini interlock proposal as well.
===================================
4.6 Security
Owner: Marcus Meissner
No security concerns at this moment.
===================================
4.7 Package Hub
Owner: Wolfgang Engel, Scott Bahling
Not present. Wolfgang excused himself ahead of the time.
===================================
4.8 Beta Program
Owner: Vincent Moutoussamy
Not present.
- All our discussions with the stakeholders of the project can be found athttps://confluence.suse.com/display/EPI/Opening+our+Bugzilla#OpeningourBu….
- When and how can we start building JeOS images for 15.3/Jump 15.2.1?
===================================
4.9 Engineering / Product Migration
Owner: Jiri Srain
Not present.
installation-images difference: We need to analyze and document the difference first to see whether there are options to unfork without changes to the way we build media
===================================
4.10 Engineering - Kernel
Owner: Libor Pechacek
Lubos to ask Takashi or Michal to join this call.
===================================
4.11 Engineering - Desktop
Owner: Frederic Crozat
KDE libraries have been integrated this week. Subversion and fwupd are submitted as maintenance update. Packages waiting for KDE libraries are being prepared. plymouth branding changes have been sent to Factory and will be pushed to SLE after
Frederic thinks that this might fix the issue on Leap/Jump with fallback to the default three-dot theme. A fix is in maintenance queue (https://smelt.suse.de/incident/12798/ ) but seems to be blocked somewhere in QA maintenance ( https://smelt.suse.de/request/222764/ )
===================================
4.12 Quality Assurance / Migrations
Owner: Marita Werner, Heiko
Not present
Perhaps let's get somebody from QA migration team to act as a stakeholder.
Lubos invited migration team to this meeting.

4.14 Marketing and Community management
Owner: Douglas DeMaio (on leave)
Provided info to KDE Akademy Attendees -
Review of the landing page for Jump before any further announcementshttps://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Leap:Jump
https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/ii9jvw/opensuse_jump_distributio… seemed like there was a lack of "information".
Consider providing a survey on https://survey.opensuse.org/ for a Beta Release of Jump to get feedback from the community. This would provide good marketing material as well.

[opensuse-factory] how to have TW microos ppc64le isos to be rsync from obs to openqa o3 ?
by Normand 10 Sep '20
by Normand 10 Sep '20
10 Sep '20
I do not know what need to be added/modified to have "obs_rsync" to
rsync microos isos to o3.
If I compare the ARM (1) and PowerPC (2) urls
* the ARM one has "OBS synchronization folders"
* the PowerPC one has directly "OBS synchronization"
How to define a base and microos "OBS synchronization folders" for PowerPC ?
(1) https://openqa.opensuse.org/admin/obs_rsync/openSUSE:Factory:ARM:ToTest
(2)

[opensuse-factory] Dropping support for DISABLE_RESTART_ON_UPDATE/DISABLE_STOP_ON_REMOVAL
by Franck Bui 10 Sep '20
by Franck Bui 10 Sep '20
10 Sep '20
Hi,
This is to announce that we'll soon drop support for DISABLE_RESTART_ON_UPDATE
and DISABLE_STOP_ON_REMOVAL variables defined in /etc/sysonfig/service.
These variables allow users to prevent *all* daemons from being restarted while
their configuration, plugins, libraries or whatever on disk they depend on have
changed. This can lead to various inconsistencies and also prevent security
updates from being applied.
While a few packages might have good reasons to not be restarted (because they
simply don't support it like it was the case for logind) this should be handled
at package level and handled by the package maintainer but not turned off for
all services (!) by users that might not fully understand the consequences.
So unless someone comes up with a real use case, support for these variables
will be dropped in a near future.
Thanks.

[opensuse-factory] Heads up regarding WSL and Windows for ARM cross compilation effort.
by Lubos Kocman 10 Sep '20
by Lubos Kocman 10 Sep '20
10 Sep '20
Hello openSUSE!
I would like to raise awareness about the effort which is currently
happening for openSUSE's Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on ARM.
Guillaume is currently working on the cross-compiling effort for WSL-
DistroLauncher on ARM utilizing LLVM instead of GCC that doesn't
support Windows for ARM build target. WSL-DistroLauncher is the missing
part to build WSL images for aarch64 in OBS.
There were some cases where Guillaume's submit requests were rejected
and therefore delayed because people referred to the missing support
case with GCC/arm64 for Windows. And this is why we need to spread the
word.
Why is it important? WSL on ARM is not the highest priority item for
Guillaume, and we are happy that he found time to work on this effort
all, so we want to avoid any delay as it significantly slows down the
progress.
For those who are interested in helping Guillaume:
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:Guillaume_G:WSL
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1162960
Thank you very much in advance!
Best regards

==== acpica ====
Version update (20200528 -> 20200717)
- Update to version 20200717
ACPICA kernel-resident subsystem:
* Do not increment OperationRegion reference counts for field units. Recent
server firmware has revealed that this reference count can overflow on
large servers that declare many field units (thousands) under the same
OperationRegion. This occurs because each field unit declaration will add
a reference count to the source OperationRegion. This release solves the
reference count overflow for OperationRegion objects by preventing
fieldUnits from incrementing their parent OperationRegion's reference
count.
* Replaced one-element arrays with flexible-arrays, which were introduced
in C99.
* Restored the readme file containing the directions for generation of
ACPICA from source on MSVC 2017. Updated the file for MSVC 2017. File is
located at: generate/msvc2017/readme.txt
iASL Compiler/Disassembler and ACPICA tools:
* iASL: Fixed a regression found in version 20200214. Prevent iASL from
emitting an extra byte of garbage data when control methods declared a
single parameter type without using braces. This extra byte is known to
cause a blue screen on the Windows AML interpreter.
* iASL: Made a change to allow external declarations to specify the type of
a named object even when some name segments are not defined. This change
allows the following ASL code to compile
(When DEV0 is not defined or not defined yet):
External (\_SB.DEV0.OBJ1, IntObj)
External (\_SB.DEV0, DeviceObj)
* iASL: Fixed a problem where method names in "Alias ()" statement could be
misinterpreted. They are now interpreted correctly as method invocations.
* iASL: capture a method parameter count (Within the Method info segment,
as well as the argument node) when using parameter type lists.

==== fetchmail ====
Version update (6.4.1 -> 6.4.8)
Subpackages: fetchmailconf
- Update fetchmail.keyring file
- Use %{_prefix}/lib instead of %{_libexecdir}
- update to 6.4.8:
* Add a test program fm_realpath, and a t.realpath script, neither to be
installed. These will test resolution of the current working directory.
* TRANSLATION UPDATES
* Plug memory leaks when parts of the configuration (defaults, rcfile, command
line) override one another.
* fetchmail terminated the placeholder command string too late and included
garbage from the heap at the end of the string. Workaround: don't use place-
holders %h or %p in the --plugin string. Bug added in 6.4.0 when merging
Gitlab merge request !5 in order to fix an input buffer overrun.
Faulty commit 418cda65f752e367fa663fd13884a45fcbc39ddd.
* Fetchmail now checks for errors when trying to read the .idfile
* Fetchmail's error messages that reports that the defaults entry isn't the
first was made more precise. It could be misleading if there was a poll or
skip statement before the defaults.
* Fetchmail documentation was updated to require OpenSSL 1.1.1.
OpenSSL 1.0.2 reached End Of Life status at the end of the year 2019.
Fetchmail will tolerate, but warn about, 1.0.2 for now on the assumption that
distributors backport security fixes as the need arises.
Fetchmail will also warn if another SSL library that is API-compatible
with OpenSSL lacks TLS v1.3 support.
* If the trust anchor is missing, fetchmail refers the user to README.SSL.
* The AC_DECLS(getenv) check was removed, its only user was broken and not
accounting for that AC_DECLS always defines HAVE_DECL_... to 0 or 1, so
fetchmail never declared a missing getenv() symbol (it was testing with
[#]ifdef). Remove the backup declaration. getenv is mandated by SUSv2 anyways.
* fetchmailconf now supports Python 3 and currently requires the "future"
package, see https://pypi.org/project/future/.
* fetchmailconf: The minimum supported version is now Python 2.7.13, but it is
recommended to use at least 2.7.16 (due to its massive SSL updates).
Older Python versions may check SSL certificates not strictly enough,
which may cause fetchmail to complain later, if the certificate verify fails.
* fetchmailconf now autoprobes SSL-wrapped connections (ports 993 and 995 for
IMAP and POP3) as well and by preference.
* fetchmailconf now defaults newly created users to "ssl" if either of the
existing users sets ssl, or if the server has freshly been probed and
found supporting ssl.
There is a caveat: adding a user to an existing server without probing it
again may skip adding ssl. (This does not prevent STARTTLS.)
* Fix three bugs in fetchmail.man (one unterminated string to .IP macro, one
line that ran into a .PP macro, .TH date format), and remove one .br request
from inside the table, which is unsupported by FreeBSD 12's mandoc(1) formatter.
* Further man page fixes and additions by Chris Mayo and Gregor Zattler.
* When evaluating the need for STARTTLS in non-default configurations (SSL
certificate validation turned off), fetchmail would only consider --sslproto
tls1 as requiring STARTTLS, now all non-empty protocol versions do.
* fetchmailconf now properly writes "no sslcertck" if sslcertck is disabled.
* fetchmailconf now catches and reports OS errors (including DNS errors) when
autoprobing.
* fetchmailconf received a host of other bugfixes, see the Git commit log.

==== rubygem-kramdown ====
Version update (2.2.1 -> 2.3.0)
- updated to version 2.3.0
[#]# kramdown 2.3.0 released
Although this is a minor version bump there is **one breaking change**: Parsing of XML processing
instructions was removed because they are invalid for HTML5 documents.
This change should only affect a negligible amount of existing kramdown documents since XML
processing instructions were never something a normal user would use.
Additionally, CVE-2020-14001 is addressed to avoid problems when using the `{::options /}` extension
together with the 'template' option. **This means updating is highly recommended!**
[#]# Changes
* 2 major changes:
- New option 'forbidden_inline_options' to restrict the options allowed with the `{::options /}`
extension. This also addresses the security issue described in [CVE-2020-14001].
- Parsing of XML processing instructions is not done anymore for kramdown documents because they
are invalid for HTML5 (fixes issue [#660] by Samuel Williams)
* 1 minor change:
- Several internal changes with respect to memory usage and performance (PRs [#654], [#655],
[#665] by Ashwin Maroli)
* 2 bug fixes:
- Extend allowed characters in IDs set with headers to all characters allowed by XML (fixes [#658]
by Samuel Williams)
- Fix thread safety issue by moving global state into an instance variable (fixes [#663]
by Samuel Williams)
* 1 other change:
- Documentation fixes and updates (issue [#662] by Samuel Williams, PR [#656] by Noah Doersing)

Hi
I updated tumbleweed a few days ago (and again today) and since then I'm
getting lots of syslog messages... below are just a few lines, but they
just keep repeating... I filtered these out now in syslog-ng, but
thought I report this here, in case this is something that should get
fixed...
