hi there,
i'm visually impared and wanted to try out opensuse-tumbleweed,
I downloaded the gnome-live iso and booted from it hopeing that I
would be able to launch the screen reader gnome-orca.
I pressed alt plus windows key plus s to launch orca, no reaction was
given, e.g there was no sound.
could someone tell me if gnome-orca, speech-dispatcher, and espeak-ng
are installed on the live-iso?
if not could these packages be added and enabled?
if they are not then I will not be able to try out open-suse.
the non-live image does not speak i'm speaking of the big dvd image.
thanks for reading!
Majid Hussain

The new %optflag -flto=n gets it's n from the same place as %_smp_mflags
so if you have placed the %limit_build macro after %optflags you may
have a higher number of threads for lto than you have for make. I really
don't know if this is harmful to runtime but it brought back
intermittent build failures to graphics/blender.
I've written a warning in the wiki entry for %limit_build
Regards
Dave P

[opensuse-factory] Tumblweed - Review of the weeks 2019/28 & 29
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 19 Jul '19
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 19 Jul '19
19 Jul '19
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers
During the last two weeks, openSUSE Tumbleweed has been reconfigured to
build all packages (where possible) using LTO ([0] Link-Time
Optimization). Whenever we have such a big change in compiler or
compiler flags, we are rebuilding the entire distribution. With
the 12k source packages, that can take a moment. Even OBS has a
limited number of workers it offers to produce the distro. Since the
last review, we published 4 snapshots (0708, 0713, 0716 and 0717).
Sadly, the announcer did miss two of those snapshots (0708 and 0713),
due to technical difficulties (in manager lingo - in technical
language, there was simply a bug exposed in Leap 15.1 and the machine
creating the announcements was updated from Leap 42.3 to 15.1).
The snapshots contained those changes/updates:
* Full rebuild with LTO enabled
* Meas 19.1.2
* Mozilla Thunderbird 60.8.0
* KDE Applications 19.04.3
* FreeType2 2.10.1
* Linux kernel 5.1.16
* TeXLive 2019
These things are currently being forged and tested:
* Add -Werror=return-type to CFLAGS
* Squid 4.8
* Linux Kernel 4.2.1
* Dracut 049
* KDE Frameworks 5.60.0
* KDE Plasma 5.16.3
* Mozilla Firefox 68.0
Cheers,
Dominique

Hello,
(sorry for the massive cross-post - if you answer, please reply only on
one mailinglist)
TL;DR: If you sent a mail to one of the openSUSE mailinglists yesterday
and it didn't arrive, please re-send it. Please also re-send any mail
you sent to admin(a)o.o or board(a)o.o yesterday.
Longer version:
As you probably noticed by observing the silence in your inbox, the
mailinglists were down yesterday.
This downtime which had two reasons:
a) postfix not starting on our outgoing mailserver after a kernel update
and reboot - one of the server's IPs wasn't configured fast enough on
boot and prevented starting postfix
b) our mailinglist software needing additional AppArmor permissions
after a kernel update. This is a known change for newer kernel
versions, but shouldn't happen as part of a kernel update, therefore
I opened https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1142120
The downtime started around 7:00 UTC (9:00 CEST). I noticed it in the
evening, and around 21:50 UTC (23:50 CEST) everything worked again.
a) wouldn't be too bad - the sending mailservers queues the mails, and
they "just" get delayed.
Unfortunately issue b) is more problematic - it seems the mailinglist
software failed with $? = 0 so postfix thought the mails were
successfully delivered, but in fact they are more or less lost. (Our
mailinglist admin found them in the incoming/ directory, but he's on
vacation with terrible internet access and probably can't do much about
this in the next days. Sending out the then-old mails when he's back
doesn't really make sense IMHO.)
Therefore: If you sent a mail to one of our mailinglists yesterday and
it didn't arrive, please re-send it. Please also re-send any mail you
sent to admin(a)o.o or board(a)o.o yesterday.
Regards,
Christian Boltz

Hi all,
The YaST team has just published another sprint report. You can find the
whole post, as usual, in lizards.opensuse.org:
https://lizards.opensuse.org/2019/07/19/yast-sprint-80/
Here's a short summary:
* A new version of yast2-network will be submitted to Tumbleweed
shortly, including quite some internal changes as part of the
refactoring effort.
* The support for offline installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise products
has been improved to handle modules and extensions dependencies
automatically, among other goodies.
* The partitioning proposal has been adapted to support SUSE Manager
special needs.
* The guided partitioning ignores now the
adjust_by_ram

parameter in IBM z Systems, where it is basically useless.
* Some (open)SUSE 15 features have been backported to 5th Service Pack
of SUSE Linux Enteprise
Enjoy!
Regards,
Imo

Anybody else seeing this problem?
==== kernel-firmware ====
Version update (20190618 -> 20190628)
Subpackages: ucode-amd
- Update to version 20190628:
...
* iwlwifi: update Core45 FWs for 22260, 9000 and 9260
After the update, no wifi and dmesg showed problems with the firmware starting:
Jul 18 21:42:00 rftlt kernel: iwlwifi 0000:3b:00.0: Firmware not running - cannot dump error
Reverting /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode to the previous version fixed the problem.

==== libICE ====
Version update (1.0.9 -> 1.0.10)
Subpackages: libICE-devel libICE6 libICE6-32bit
- Update to version 1.0.10
* This release provides a fix for CVE-2017-2626 for platforms
which don't have arc4random_buf() in their default libraries
but do have getentropy(), such as Linux platforms with a kernel
version of 3.17 or newer and a glibc version of 2.25 or newer.
(libICE 1.0.9 already ensured that arc4random_buf() is used on
platforms that have it to provide sufficient entropy in ICE
key generation, but left other platforms with the weaker methods.
Linux platforms could also have linked against libbsd to use
arc4random_buf() with libICE 1.0.9 for stronger keys.)
- supersedes U_Use-getentropy-if-arc4random_buf-is-not-available.patch

Version update (9.17.41 -> 9.17.42)
- Bump version: 9.17.41 ? 9.17.42
- Fixed get_persistent_device_from_unix_node
The method get_persistent_device_from_unix_node takes a device
path and looks up it's basename to be present as persistent
variant below the given schema, e.g by-id. However if the
method receives an already persistent device path e.g from
/dev/mapper the persistent schema representation will only
match a numbered dm-N device and not the map name. The method
then returns nothing but should return the original device
path. This caused bad after effects like reported in
Issue SUSE-Enceladus/azure-li-services#163
- [doc] Add user documentation about the usage of the embedded Vagrantfile
- Document the usage of the `vagrantconfig.embedded_vagrantfile` attribute
- Remove the suggestion to generate the ssh keys during image creation (this
results in **all** boxes having the same ssh host keys, which is pretty
dangerous if someone would use a vagrant box in a production environment.)
- Stop recommending veewee, this project is dead
- Replace forgotten hard coded number with {schema_version}
