Yes exactly. This would be good in general and especially for users that
run out of disk space and do not know about 'snapper delete' or how to
recover the situation.

Hi,
in the light of current events, I would like to start to discuss a scheme for
improving the regular Tumbleweed upgrade performance.
Given the following scenario: a local LAN with a couple of Tumbleweed
installations, and optionally a server.
I) a modification of the zypper download lib to honor an environment variable,
e.g. ZYPPERCACHE, and relaying the downloads to that system (server), if set
II) a zypper caching server, that uses the zypper download lib, but implicitly
keeps the downloads for later reuse.
If ZYPPERCACHE is set and reachable, all files must be fetched though it.
If ZYPPERCACHE is set and not reachable, zypper may (interactively) warn about
it, and proceed as usual.
Such a scheme would greatly relieve the load on the public infrastructure, and
improve the upgrade performance of local systems significantly.
I'm using a shared /var/cache/zypp/packages scheme already, that improves the
situation already, but suffers from a couple of issues: two zypper processes
are treading on each others feet, the repo definitions have to be synced
carefully, it's hacky, etc...
I think, that his great product deserves a decent solution to this problem. If
it works well, other openSUSE distributions may profit as well.
Cheers,
Pete

Dear Digikam users.
Is the current digikam v6.1.0 running on your tumbleweed system?
For me, digikam is eating all memory. At about 88% memory usage my
system freezes. The mouse only reacts after minutes. The keyboard LEDs
do not switch on/off any more. Strangely, no OOM killer kills the
digikam process that consumes about 103% cpu until the memory is 88%
where the cpu goes to about 50%. I then need to hard reset the computer.
Started in a Konsole, digikam.general is reporting repeatedly: "Detected
change, triggering rescan of "/my/picture/folder/"
Then, there are some pictures from a Photoshop book with .psd extension
that "digikam.dimg.qimage: Can not load"
Some weeks ago digikam was working fine.
I suspect a digikam bug or that I got some digikam components mixed from
different repos (had such a problem some years ago) kde:extra or
something. How can I check that all digikam components are from just one
repo?
Thank you,
Michael

Bug Fixes:

failures. (Jamie English, #1086)

* Issue an `ArgumentError` rather than a `NoMethodError` when `be_an_instance_of` and
`be_kind_of` matchers encounter objects not supporting those methods.

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers
The last week has been rather ‘slow’ when it comes to snapshots
published. Unfortunately, OBS had a small bug last Friday, which was
fixed rather quickly, but its effects were devastating on the staging
process and on the product builds. It took us several iterations of
identifying missing binaries and rebuilding the missing bits and
pieces. For this reason, I can only report about two snapshots
published this week *0607 and 0712) – and for this, I’m even cheating
and including the latest snapshot which is only just in progress of
being distributed to mirrors.
The changes included in those two snapshots are:
* gdb 8.3
* libvirt 5.4.0
* KDE Plasma 5.16.0
* LibreOffice 6.2.4.2
* SQLite 3.28.0
The list of major changes in Staging areas did not change drastically –
and the main topics worked on are still:
* KDE Applications 19.04.2
* LLVM 8.0
* openssl 1.1.1c
* Texlive 2019
* Qt 5.13
* swig 4.0
* cmake 3.14
Cheers,
Dominique
These is this month's compression shootout.
News:
* Fedora announced intent to switch rpms to Zstd compression; the reported
timings on the proposal paper
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Switch_RPMs_to_zstd_compression
suggest to me that the measurement was not done with due statistical care
with regard to CPU thermal throttling characteristics.
* Earlier this year Ubuntu switched kernel and initramfs to lz4
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2018-March/040258.html
* In both of these instances, decompression time is the hot new topic.
(Something the previous openSUSE report,
https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2019-05/msg00344.html
did not analyze)
Change in methods:
* I cut the testset to just x86_64 rpms (dropping *.noarch.rpm) to cut
time. The proportion of executables over data should be higher now.
* Ran xz only from -1..-5; we all know its progression characteristics
(-6..-9) from older tests.
* Added brotli, all levels
New results:
* http://paste.opensuse.org/view/97377621 - compression
* http://paste.opensuse.org/view/80494192 - decompression
* http://inai.de/files/openSUSE-compression-201906.ods - details
Interpretation:
* The ups and downs in the decompression times are read as jitter;
they often complete in less than a minute.
* For a particular algorithm, decompression speed is unaffected by chosen
compression level. This means the choice of level is only influenced
by the desired compression-time characteristics.
* zstd decompression is decidedly faster than xz (~4.3x).
Fedora is making sensible choices.
* lz4 decompression is 15% slower than zstd.
Ubuntu is making suboptimal choices again.
* Brotli: only marginally better in the low-to-medium-level
compression than zstd. Equally weak in decomp like lz4.
That's probably the reasons it was not worth supporting in rpm.
* Fedora's plan to replace xz-2 with zstd-18 will at least
double their compression times.
* Replacing openSUSE's xz-5 with zstd-18 gives the decompression benefit,
no improvement in compression time and a slight space increase.
* xz-5 to zstd-10 would also give a 7x compression time saving
with a slight more space increase. (23.6->27.9G)
So with that, I propose changing openSUSE to zstd-10 that will give people
time back they're waiting for.. for the computer. xkcd.com/303 .
The problem is that even though we have a suitable version of rpm since
Dec 2017, the maintainer did not enable zstd so the "compatibility time"
accumulated since was unfortunately wasted.

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers
During the last two weeks, openSUSE Tumbleweed has seen a total of 9
snapshots being released. As you come to expect from Tumbleweed, those
snapshots are filled with updates. And as usual, the snapshots are
tested by openQA before they are shipped out (in the last two weeks,
for example, three snapshots were tested and discarded before
publishing). The snapshots that did get published were 0524, 0525,
0527, 0529, 0601, 0603, 0604, 0605 and 0606 (hot off the press),
summing up to those major changes:
* Linux kernel 5.1.4, 5.1.5 & 5.1.7
* Switch to GCC 9 as distro default compiler (full rebuild)
* Mozilla Firefox 67.0 & Thunderbird 60.7.0
* libopenraw 0.1.3 (beware: .pc file was renamed from *-1.0.pc to *-0.1.pc)
* Mesa 19.0.5
* flatpak 1.4.0
* strace 5.1
* nodejs10.16.0
The distro keeps on rolling, and based on the staging projects I can
predict those updates coming soon to Tumbleweed:
* openssl 1.1.1c
* Texlive 2019

The latest version of bbswitch-kmp-default is 0.8_k5.1.4_1-7.90 which
is for kernel 5.1.4.
Thus no bbswitch module for 5.1.7.
Is it because bbswitch is not compatible with kernel changes made
afterwards ?
