[opensuse-factory] Switch systemd to the unified cgroup hierarchy by default

Hello. Quick background -- there are two cgroup APIs, systemd can maintain cgroup hierarchy in three modes: legacy (v1), unified (v2) and hybrid (v1 for controllers + v2 for (mainly) process tracking). Hybrid is the current default. All [1] controllers have their v2 counterpart since kernel v5.2 and support for them is present in systemd since v240. The v2 API rectifies problems of v1 (see [2] for details), allows new features of controllers and sees the most development. However, the systemd hybrid hierarchy mandates use of v1 controllers. Therefore I suggest that the upstream closely following distribution as Tumbleweed switched systemd to the unified mode by default. The used hierarchy is transparent to the users of systemd resource directives (of course as long as they rely on v1 behavior only). OTOH, there are some direct users (containers and libvirt come to my mind first) that may need some adjustments/updates to operate as with the hybrid hierarchy (or they can manually switch back to the hybrid hierarchy [3]). I'm asking in this list, whether there are any use cases that are worth considering before this potentially breaking change. Thanks, Michal P.S. [opensuse-factory] Formal specification of tags as a replacement for groups

The Group: line in .spec files is a freeform text field that is used to declare categories that a browsing application can sort packages by. Historically, the Group: field value specified exactly one category out of a hierarchially-ordered tree of many categories such as: * Amusements * Games * 3D * Teachings * Productivity * Graphics * CAD (3D) * 2D Because a package may fit into multiple categories, this proposal suggests to move away from the hierarchial system and instead use a tag system as a base, wherein the Group: field is a space-separated list of keywords that characterize the package. This way, the "kate" package for example may be associated with the keywords "kde" and "editor" and the "gedit" package with "gnome" and "editor", such that a user browsing the software catalog can filter either by "kde" or "gnome" (depending on preference), or by "editor" (if it does not matter which UI) to discover packages he might be interested in. This tag system is inspired by those of freshmeat/freecode/freshcode.club and stackexchange.com. This tag system is already used by SUSE PackageHub, https://packagehub.suse.com/ . Experiments have shown (in both a POC and in PackageHub) that the words from the classic group list make for a good start, in other words, the existing classic groups as present in .spec files provide a starting point and thus do not qualify as "totally useless" as some opponents repeatedly claim. The new suggested tag list is even derived from the old list because it turns out it was not overly bad, it was just single-value. If and when a maintainer updates a package for some reason (version update, patch added, etc.), s/he can also update the Group: field "en passant" to become such a ws-separated tag list. There is no strict need to do a flag day or for replacing classic group values across the distribution all at once. Packages with the new system are already in the process of being delivered. [opensuse-factory] TW /etc/ssl/certs destroyed, no networking or desktop after update

LS, I am annoyed that once in a (short) while my tumbleweed /etc/ssl/certs directory is being destroyed and repopulated with new certs. The latter is fine, but deleting my own certificates is not such a good idea. Please, make your updates but keep hands of other certificates. Today, after the latest update, I also lost my network connections as well as my Xcfe desktop (which froze the system). I can only get my network back after using 'yast2 lan', which restarts the service again. I have to do that now after every reboot. Hi all, even though Olaf has heroically fixed i4l-base to build again in Factory (https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/741743), I doubt it will work, because not only the now missing header files have been removed from the linux kernel, but also all the accompanying infrastructure... This happened with commit 9c3c0c2048149d946d7f3ebdcbe70e2946750bfb Author: Arnd Bergmann <arnd(a)arndb.de> Date: Thu Apr 18 22:43:36 2019 +0200 isdn: remove isdn4linux which ended up in Linux-5.3. So should we keep it building or just drop it? Does it serve any purpose without the accompanying kernel functionality? The dependent packages are not so much: ~> osc -A suse whatdependson openSUSE:Factory i4l-base standard x86_64 i4l-base : capi4hylafax wine wine-nine-standalone wine:staging abd I'd guess that WINE can be just configured to exclude ISDN functionality. Any opinions? [opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed: NetworkManager does not run script on shutdown

Dear list readers, I frequently work with servers and before i cut my network connection i like to do certain server related tasks. Most of the time i do that manually before i close my network connection or shutdown my workstation. But in order to make sure that important tasks will be done even if i forget about them i wrote a script and put it in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/pre-down.d. The script logs its start and all its actions to the journal. When i close a network connection manually (with plasma5-nm) the script is called, does all what it is supposed to do and then the network connection is closed. However on shutdown that script gets never called. "man NetworkManager" says "pre-down The interface will be deactivated but has not yet been disconnected from the network. Scripts acting on this event must be placed or symlinked into the /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/pre-down.d directory, and NetworkManager will wait for script execution to complete before disconnecting the interface from its network. Note that this event is not emitted for forced disconnections, like when carrier is lost or a wireless signal fades. It is only emitted when there is an opportunity to cleanly handle a network disconnection event." That is close to the current description in https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/stable/NetworkManager.html I consider "shutdown" not to be the sort of "forced disconnection" mentioned in those manuals and therefore think the script should be called. Searching the internet i found this https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=701242 but that is quite old (2013 - 2017) and this https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/issues?utf8=%E… also some months without any reply. So now i'm quite confused: Is NetworkManager still supposed to call scripts in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/pre-down.d even on system shutdown or not? Please could someone enlighten me? Thank you. My system runs openSUSE Tumbleweed 20191023 but the described behavior is the same on openSUSE Leap 15.0 and 15.1. Regards Hagen PS - I believe to vaguely recall that the script used to be called even on shutdown last year (openSUSE Leap 42.x). - I know that i probably could write a systemd-service to handle the shutdown-case.
