The problem was initiated as a personal attack initiated by Eduard Bloch in May 2005. Bloch did start to send repeated personal insults to me after he send me a very buggy "utf-8 patch" for mkisofs that could not be integrated into mkisofs because of massive quality problems. He later invented the fairy tale that there is a license problem..... The license change in cdrtools was done in order to defend the software against the attacks from Eduard Bloch. There is absolutely no license problem with the original software. This has been verified by the Sun Legal department, Eben Moglen and a German lawywer. I have a private mail from Eben Moglen that confirms that there is no license problem in the original software and that the "GPL FAQ" on the FSF website is wrong. There is definitely no public claim from Moglen about problems, there is just an obviously incorrect POV claim from Marc Shuttleworth. The test on wikipedia is wrong and unfortunately mostly repeats the FUD created by Eduard Bloch. There is however a legal problem with cdrkit. Cdrkit is in conflict with the copyright law and cannot be distributed legally. Sun is of course distributing the original software only. [opensuse-factory] Problems with intel driver

Hi, Latest factory only boots into a black X without any way to go into text console - the only thing that works is pressing the power off to trigger reboot. Does anyone else see this problem or is it specific to my hardware? Hello, What is the proper way of installing moblin, if I don't want to trash my whole disk with the OEM installer? I got a netbook with Windows pre installed for work, but I have plenty of free space on the HDD to test Linux when Windows is not required. [opensuse-factory] About M5 (status distribution)

Hi, We passed the deadline of new package versions without any major harm, the build failures even reduced and the last DVD build I tested did even install flawless. But I'm not so sure it's worth publishing M5 ISOs (beside the automatically published live ISOs). I would rather spend more time on fixing issues that come up with the current version set and then publish M6 ISOs. What do you think? We can of course also update the factory snapshot, so that M4 users will get M5 with zypper dup. [opensuse-factory] grub bites again

On a laptop "zypper dup" late M4 ended up with grub hanging in stage 1.5 on reboot. On a box updated from M4 to M5 today, it hung at installing grub, needing CTRL-C to get out of it, then killing the rpm process and doing "zypper dup" again to complete the upgrade. Standalone rpm -Uvh of grub likewise hangs as does "zypper in -f grub" sitting there at 99% currently. I suspect I shall have to boot from CD and manually fix grub to get that box to boot. I didn't check the version of grub previously installed, but I have 2 other x86_64 boxes at M4 with grub-0.97-160.3 that reboot OK and a x86 box at that level of grub and M5 not yet rebooted. Hola, Just wondering: is there a good reason that we ship all the locale data in glibc-locale on all systems, instead of shipping the files in bundle-lang-common-* (so that people only have what they need)? [opensuse-factory] Need to add boot message Warning about duplicate fixed IP address on subnet

List, Moving machines between subnets yesterday, I was faced with the problem of a box completing the boot process and then hanging just before login was reached. No message, no log entry and no warnings. The only thing shown on the console was miscellaneous smb and normal nmb browse master messages but nothing concerning a duplicate IP. The conflict arose when before moving the box from subnet to subnet the last thing I did before shutting the machine down was to use yast so set the IP of the box to the new subnet. I was certain (I thought) that the assigned IP wasn't used. Several hours later when the box was started on the new subnet, thinking about a possible IP conflict was the last thing on my mind. Nevertheless, the box would not boot. To investigate I booted to repair mode and started shutting down the activation of processes in reverse order of activation to eliminate messages on the console and hopefully find out why the box wouldn't reach login. (shutting down xinetd, smb, ksysguardd, etc..) Nothing provided a glimpse of the error. (There was one obscure smb socket message that hinted at an IP conflict, but I doubt anyone other than samba developers would have clicked to the relationship) Finally, just shooting in the dark, I started yast and started picking through the settings. Somewhat on a whim, I decided to step through the network configuration again. Global, Overview and Routing were fine so I decided to edit the adapter configuration. All settings were fine. Just by chance, instead of clicking "abort" to leave the settings unchanged, I decided to click "finish" and -- Wham! -- yast issued the "Address already taken on network" error message that identified the conflict. Just exactly what yast should have done. Problem solved. In the openSuSE boot process, when the network card is activated, this same check should be performed and a message displayed and logged concerning the conflict. In its current state the boot process proceeds right through network activation without giving any indication of a conflicting IP. (I know, I watched the boot messages for the network probably 10 times during this process). The boot process needs to be smart enough to conduct this check and warn when a conflict occurs. It seems like this would just required taking the few lines of code from the yast2 card configuration check and putting it in the network activation script. Yes, I know this is just a check to protect people from their own stupidity, but that is what good software is supposed to do. I added https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=526495 -- David C.
