[opensuse-factory] Software Updater 10.3 Alpha 2

Hey Group; As a user (not root or su) on this system with root permissions while using KDE3 the Software Updater showed that there some 1400 updates. Yes! 1400. I called up the updater yesterday and it stated "Resolving dependencies" Here it is today and it is still trying to "Resolving dependencies". It is grayed out with no escape/abandon button. With the mouse pointer over the image I have a running clock. [opensuse-factory] Install Yast headache

OpenSuSE 10.3 Alpha 2 CDs from isos I have noticed on about every recent complete new install (not upgrade). Yast fails if a network connection is NOT available. I currently am loading a unit that has NO network connection to a modem or network card/device. If I tell Yast to NOT check the network, it hangs. If I reboot, Yast comes up at a point prior to runlevel load, at the point prior to setting the "root" password and where Zenworks wants to sync. Yast fails at the point just after setting the network to "skip" or when assigned (static IP, resolv.conf, and gateway). Is it normal that the hardware detection and module loading takes absolute ages? Times on PIII-450 Intel 440BX chipset (approx): basic drivers: 25s ata_piix: 1:45min (!!) usb devices: 35s ieee1394: 15s It's never been that slow before. Also, package hylafax is missing from the DVD. [opensuse-factory] YaST meta-package module

Benjamin Weber has been writing about his metapackage project a few times recently but hasn't received much feedback. So I thought I'd try to help promoting it a bit, since I think it has the potential to solve some very common issues, like the never ending debate about multimedia codecs. Of course we won't be able to include the codecs, but with Benjamins project in the distro we could make such things as installing those codecs ridiculously simple. You'll find a package of the metapackage yast2-module here: http://bw.uwcs.co.uk/mp/yast2-mpp-0.0-0.suse102.noarch.rpm I've set up a quick proof of concept web page to show some examples of how this metapackage handling can help users: http://suse.linuxin.dk/ymp The page is optimized for Konq only, which doesn't matter much, as this is just a proof of concept, and currently only konqueror has support for the metapackages in the abovementioned package anyway. It could pontentially also be used to add repos only, without installing any packages. It can be used to install packages instantly when you find them in the package search, also developed by Benjamin. Hey Group; Has anyone IDed the Ethernet module for a AUSU A7V8X-X MB with a Realtech chipset. Looking in the case it appears to be a RTL82018 chip. I tried a rt8139too and some others with no luck so far. NOTE; this unit may have been damaged by lightening. It does appear the USR modem is gone out. [opensuse-factory] my java application crashes because of an xlib problem

Hi, everybody! A java application I have been using for quite some time (in different versions) now crashes immediately during start up, after I migrated from suse-10.1 to 10.3alpha3 plus a lot of updates from the "SUSE factory". You can find output from that crash further below. Before I wrote this, I googled for this: java assertion "c->xlib.lock" and I found recent statements dated "Sun, 11 Mar 2007" on www.mail-archive.com/debian-x@lists.debian.org , specifically http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-x@lists.debian.org/msg59050.html , that make me believe, that's a "common and well-known" problem (my words!!). Looks like the problem also gets discussed here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sun-java5/+bug/86103 I am using xorg-x11-server 7.2-72 and java-1_5_0-sun 1.5.0_update11-5 .
