[opensuse-factory] round orange thingee

in my tray, that little round thingee turned orange. in putting my cursor on it is said i had 18 updates to download. i started it and found there was 18 updates, then it tells me it was resolving dependencies and then got a screen that says mishandled files or something like the, clicked ok and the screen disappeared and the round orange thingee in my tray disappeared. is this normal? running 10.1. -- Edward Dunagin-Dunigan-Dunnigan 4646 Glenwood Drive Bozeman, MT 59718 mobile 406-570-0992

[opensuse-factory] YOU userfriendliness - "YaST crashed" false reports

Hi, this is just a little bit of feedback or a notification about something you might already know, but maybe it's not clear enough: The new way YOU behaves is confusing and causes many, many false bug reports in user forums. YOU used to display to-be-installed patches only in the past. Now it displays all patches, even the already installed ones and the ones which don't apply at all: - To-be-installed patches have a black sign in the checkbox, already installed ones have a dark blue sign. Many users cannot distinguish them and report in user forums: "YaST crashed" if YOU exits without doing anything because all patches are already installed. - Patches which don't apply to a system, e.g. because the base packages are not installed at all, are visible in the patches selection. Many users do not understand this and report in user forums: "YaST does not select critical security patches for me". Then they select the patches, which results in MySQL, Postgresql etc. being installed on desktop systems. - Sometimes both things are even combined: A user selects all patches, even those that don't apply to his system at all, installs them, goes back to YOU, notices the dark blue signs, concludes that the patches are not installed and then repeats the procedure again, again and again - but YOU doesn't do anything because the patches are already installed. The resulting problem report is: "YaST does not install patches and crashes all the time". This is not a request to change things, I just want to make sure that you know what's going on out there. Together with the common impression that "package management doesn't work in 10.1", the result is that people make very fast conclusions and consider things as "not working" or "crashed" even if they are working just fine. I'm rewrtiting http://en.opensuse.org/Factory that was evidently very outdated. For that purpose, I need an info. Factory is a frequently changing repo. what is approximately the frequency of it's updates, in term of _minimum_ time between two updates. is it possible to have two updates in the same hour? the same day? (the same week, certainly :-). [opensuse-factory] New package manager bug?

I've installed the new official package manager updates, and subsequently wanted to play around with it a little to check up on it. It seems a lot nicer. And also the Danish localization is greatly improved. I was considering looking into joining the YaST-translation-team - but maybe now there's no need to :) I added some repos to YaST and everything worked fine with kde, kde-backports, guru. But with Packman I got the "synchronization with zmd failed" error. I then tried to add Packman to rug and got the following error. super64:/home/cb400f # rug sa --type=zypp http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.1 Packman Adding zypp service... 0% ERROR: Could not add 'http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.1': Failed to parse XML metadata: Unsigned file '/repodata/repomd.xml (http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.1)' Could this be a new bug having to do with the unsigned repo fixes? I would like to report the results and share my opinion. 10.1 runs well on older hardware once installed and zmd is turned off and beagle is only run at time one is not on system. It is actually faster than 10.0. System details. 666 P III with 128 MB RAM (Old but very usable even with Open Office *) I have two of these machines that I was running UnixWare 7.1.4 with reliant HA. So the systems are pretty much identical. For the test I downloaded all inst-source and non-oss-inst-source and packman to a SUSE 10.0 machine and set up a private network with public Class C IP addresses see diagram below. Comparisom with ZMD and without in KDE. 1, 10.0 1-3 minute to bring up installation source window. 2, 10.1 beta 3-4 1-3 minute to bring up installation source window. 3, 10.1 1.5-2.0 hours to bring up installation source window No ZMD. 4, 10.1 4.5-6.5 hours to bring up installation source window with ZMD. 5. 10.1 smart 3-10 minute (smart --shell) no ZMD 6. 10.1 smart 1.75-2 hours (smart --shell) with ZMD 7. 10.1 using smart to do uprade or update cache or packages 5+ minutes, I am able to work on other system via ssh, other windows limited responsiveness while smart is working. 8. 10.1 with ZMD Using YaST forget every thing leave system. Mouse will move at times, but not all the time nothing is possible. 9. 10.1 no ZMD 5-15 minutes to exit. 10. 10.1 smart upgrade 35 minutes 11. 10.1 after smart upgrade of 9jun06 patches 3.5 hours to exit. 12. 10.1 with ZMD 6.5-8.5 hours to save source window 13. 10.1 with ZMD patch installation 8+ hours 14. 10.1 after smart upgrade with ZMD running able to use other ssh window, but with hesitations. * zmd has been shutdown (/etc/init.d/novell-zmd stop) My 2 year old laptop 2.0GHz Celeron with 512 MB Memory 1. 10.0 update to 10.1 9 hours to update from the same souce above. 2. 10.1 with ZMD 1.5-2.5 hours to bringup installation source window. 3. 10.1 with ZMD 2.5-5.5 hours to save installation source. After Update 9 Jun 06 1. 10.1 with ZMD 15 minutes to brinupg installation source window. 2. 10.1 with ZMD 1.5-3.5 hours to save installation source window**. **Often error about ZMD and not able to sync sources. Hello :-) You have made a very good job and looks like the most important problem with zen an his companions are gone. I think really you should think of making a patch disk for the main branch. I understand you can't change what is on the cd/DVD. So you should make a patch iso cd. Problem with Sound and Suspend

Shuttle XPC, SB Audigy LS If I make a Suspend-to-* and Resume, I have no sound as user, only as root. After little work, I found out, that before Suspend permissions under /dev/snd are set to crw------ 1 marcel audio 116 After resume they are set to crw-rw--- 1 root audio 116 Driver issue? Powersave problem? Another problem is, that the output is alwasy set to the digital out. before filling a bug report, I ask to see if this is normal behavior. it's related to usb mass storage. I have the same thing with one usb key and one usb hard drive, so this may be general. say we start with no usb folder in /media. 10.1 stock (AFAIR) * you connect an usb mass storage, for example an usb key. _named_ mass storage (dunno if it's the same if not named), for example an usb key that got name from XP (vfat). *Kde give an advertisement window, I key "annuler" (cancel?). * The name is used by Hal to create a mount point. * Hal copy there a null size file named ".created-by-hal". * Hal mount the key there. the copied file don't show (it's on the host file system, not on the key). * you unplug the key. * the created directory keep resting there with a file in it. * if you plug again the key, it's mounted on the very same directory. Thats nice. But... it's not so smart :-) if, by old habbit you create the given directory before hand, or inadvertently delete the ".created-by-hal" file: _the main problem_ * next time you plug in the key, hal _don't use this directory_ (probably thinking it has an other goal) and create a new "name-1" directory. So far, so good... but the "service" in Konqueror don't know of this unusual naming. There you access still the key by "name" (not "name-1"), but read-only - I had a hard time understanding why I couldn't write there :-). The /media/name-1 directory works as expected (rw); But you have -a /media/name directory empty (nothing mounted on it) -a Konqueror service/name keeping saying the key is there, read only -a /media/name-1 directory with the actual key data _minor problem_ * suppose all goes well, you never create any usb directory yourself nor delete any file, you have several usb directories in /media, waiting for a key to be plugged. * you plug a key.. all is well. * you copy important data to this key and want to ensure the data is there before unplugging.
