What happens when you try to start up X manually? Log in as root to a text console and type "X". If all goes well, you should get the horrible grey-diamond background pattern and an X mouse cursor that you can move around. Press Ctrl-Alt-Bksp to return to the text console. I can't get to the machine until later, but when I type startx, it starts up fine (Gnome). Then logout takes me back to bash prompt. I'll try just 'X' and report back, unless this answers your question.
That answers the question, thanks. Now can you tell me what happens if you try "X -query 127.0.0.1"? Make sure you have an /etc/hosts entry for localhost e.g. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost Michael
