Hi there. I'm wondering if any of you can help me? I have been delegated with the task of formulating a test of sorts for prospective ICT technicians (2), and though the school now runs some sort of testing itself (though I don't know what they do yet) are there any suggestions as to what I can do? Have any of you been to an interview in a school for an ICT position, and if so, what did you get "tested" on? Are there any web sites that give templates for tests etc? Just wondering. Thanks, Paul

I remember hearing of one place who gave all prospective employees a copy of the company logo and the Postscript manual and gave them 1 hour to learn enough of the language to recreate the logo. This may be a bit OTT though. If the job's going to be for an ICT (must be more complicated than when I did it cos it's got an extra letter now) technician, maybe you could come up with some fault-finding excersized - both H/W and S/W. -- Gary Stainburn This email does not contain private or confidential material as it may be snooped on by interested government parties for unknown and undisclosed purposes - Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, 2000
We've interviewed a few over the last couple of years. In each case we gave them a pile of bits and watched them make a computer out of it, in order to see if they were familiar and happy messing with the hardware. Then we probed them with technical questions pertaining to the sort of stuff they are likely to need to know in schools - profiles, policies and, if you are lucky, Samba configuration :) Maybe it's too late now, but if you've advertised on standard technician grades, don't hold your breath. I managed to persuade the head to offer significantly more salary, and we are lucky enough to have 2 very good technicians. Cheers -- Phil Driscoll
