For future developments, where you are up against MS Exchange/Outlook, there are two cards to bring into play. It is a fact that the majority of viruses currently in the wild affect MS Outlook, and that this likely to continue to be true. Second, if they want an integrated personal organiser/messaging solution, then the schools version of SLOX is a very high value product that provides that in a shiny and supported package. I know it's not (yet) open source, but it's a step in the right direction, and I don't think there is anything open source that can provide this functionality in a way that education management can be sold it. Your best bet would be to try and configure it through Webmin. We used Squirelmail when we did it the linux way, but none of the staff liked it and we ended up with exchange 03 & OWA.
Not had much experience setting this sort of thing up but, from a users point of view I *personally* think Horde is the best web email application I have come across. Exchange has all the calendar integration etc. all in but the security risks alone make it make it a no go for me, and OWA is very poor. Matt

I am trying to configure an email server in our network to handle internal mail and i am having trouble finding documentation on how to do it. I have sendmail installed. Does anyone know where to find the docs or has anyone experience with this. There is nothing in the Suse admin guide - presume they want to sell me the software to do it? regards garry

If you're thinking about web based groupware solutions, then it might be worth taking a glance at eGroupware: http://www.egroupware.org/, which is browser based and runs on a standard php / mysql (or postgresql) backend. You can try it out for yourself at http://www.opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=354.
