Hi The October issue of Linux format has abilty office www.ability.com This has Word Processor Database Spreadsheet Paint and Microsoft import tools. The linux version is being ported using wine, statically linked something, Anyway it's described as a alpha version of the commercial software, so I guess it's not GPL, however I guess it would still work out cheaper tham MS office and the licencing would be far easier to understand. While on the subject of this the same issue has kylix open edition, a version of kylix for developing open source software, this again may be of interest to schools. Hope this helps. On the subject of the wish list, Would it be better to a) add some software to the Linuxjournal wish list or as most is likely to be UK school specific, add it to the suse site, or even something like the main uk linux site, what do you think? A quick note about prolog, there are a few ports of this to Linux, so check out the RPM repository as I think it's listed there. Paul
Hi Paul,

The October issue of Linux format has abilty office www.ability.com
This has
Word Processor Database Spreadsheet Paint and Microsoft import tools.
The linux version is being ported using wine, statically linked something,
[Thomas]: You are in error Paul. What do you mean by "The Linux version is being ported to WINE??" Wine is simply a Windows Emulator and does not need to run Linux apps. Hence what you mean is, is that the .DLL's and other linking libraries are being "ported" by the development team creating WINE.
Anyway it's described as a alpha version of the commercial software, so I guess it's not GPL, however I guess it would still work out cheaper tham MS office and the licencing would be far easier to understand.
[Thomas]: You're not wrong. I happen to use the "evaluation" version of ApplixWare from the SuSE 7.1 CD's. So far the evaulation hasn't expired yet, even though it is about a month overdue.

On the subject of the wish list, Would it be better to
a) add some software to the Linuxjournal wish list or as most is likely to be UK school specific, add it to the suse site, or even something like the main uk linux site,
what do you think?
[Thomas]: Since the LinuxJournal is based in the US, I think it would be better to put the information on the SuSE website, since not everone here in the UK subscribes to the LJ (shame on you!) :-)
A quick note about prolog, there are a few ports of this to Linux, so check out the RPM repository as I think it's listed there.

I don't anymore as this years sub goes to £59. There is an education section, perhaps the Uk site can have votes for Uk specific software,
A quick note about prolog, there are a few ports of this to Linux, so check out the RPM repository as I think it's listed there. [Thomas]: Paul means: www.rpmfind.net er - yes.
