Hardware required for a squid proxy/ squid guard install
What sort of spec would people use to proxy students from a currently 2Mb due to be 10Mb internet connection? I currently use squid on our intranet server, but that is about to be moved to windows (Don`t ask!) Therefore I need to install something which will take over as proxy. I have a rather memory short 600Mb 256Mb scsi server, or the more usual desktops which I could add plenty of memory to. Any advice? Thanks Rob Keeling

I guess a long line of students, a rope, and a gag? Oh, you meant a computer spec? :) Well, squid can be quite intensive, especially if there are a lot of concurrent uses to it. When I did this six years ago, I'd have recommended a 750Mhz PC with 512MB. Indeed, that spec, and anything above would still be OK, although nowadays I would recommend: 1GHz and above,
=1GB Ram (2GB if you can) 120GB Harddrive.
Remember that the bulk of squid's operation is done both in memory and disk cache, so making sure these two values in your spec are high, is about right. The processor becomes inmaterial at that point.
