Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] Router IP addresses
....Have a Network of PC working under SAMBA ....Want to connect these to the web.... ....Can I do this using a dynamically assigned account from DEMON?
Yes. Your first initial choice has to be (IMO) Full TCP/IP Internet access or not on the other machines ? ie can you get away with web only access ? If web only access then you can install a web proxy (apache or squid) on the box that connects to the ISP, and the local networking remains the same. If you want full TCP/IP Internet connectivity (FTP, email, news, etc) from all machines - you may not, as you can use all these services, by configuring up your ISP connected box to obtain the information and then configure your other machines just to use the ISP connected box - but if you do, then you have to do most of the following : 1. IP Network Address Translation (NAT)/Firewalling on the box that connects to the ISP. 2. IP Routing - essentially, all your other machines must be told a default route that 'points' to the LAN (ie not the ISP) side of your box that connects to the ISP. 3. DNS. If you want full TCP/IP access from all machines, then they will need to know the IP address of a DNS server. You have 2 choices : a) Tell them about your ISPs DNS server b) Run a DNS server on your box that connects to the ISP (in a caching-only configuration, with forwarding) and tell your other machines to use this box. A general note: It is advisable to run as little on your ISP connected box as you can get away with - so I would recommend that you don't use the same machine as you are using for Samba if possible. The ideal situation is a single machine doing firewalling/NAT with other services on other machines - but this is probably more for larger configurations. All the above just my opinions of course. Standard disclaimers apply :-) Kevin.
